Afghan lawmakers vote to replace key ministers

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The Afghan parliament has passed a vote of no confidence against the country's defense and interior ministers. Lawmakers have demanded that President Hamid Karzai appoint replacements.

Saturday's vote to disqualify the Cabinet's two top security ministers is a blow to the Karzai government as it tries to project an image of stability ahead of the looming withdrawal of international forces.

The vote came after Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak and Interior Minister Bismullah Mohammadi were questioned by parliament over what lawmakers call security lapses including cross-border attacks blamed on Pakistan's military and the recent assassinations of top officials. They also asked the ministers about allegations of corruption within their ministries.
