Alamo Bowl 2012: David Ash, Texas Longhorns Rally To Stun No. 15 Oregon State (VIDEO)

SAN ANTONIO ? David Ash wasn't sure he would start the Alamo Bowl. No one will remember after the way he finished Texas' rocky season with a validating and dazzling victory.

The sophomore threw a 36-yard touchdown strike to Marquise Goodwin with 2:24 left for the last of two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, stunning No. 15 Oregon State and lifting the Longhorns to a 31-27 comeback victory Saturday night.

The Longhorns (9-4) never led before Goodwin scored his second touchdown on a deep post pattern, just a down after Texas converted a fourth-and-1 play to keep its chances alive.

"I guess in in every situation you have to be thankful," said Ash, who was pulled in a loss to TCU a month ago and wasn't immediately selected the starter for the Alamo Bowl. "I learned a lot at TCU. It was a tough situation I was in. I was just really thankful I got another opportunity to play a game I love."

With Texas down 20-10 at halftime, Longhorns coach Mack Brown said he told his players they would win.

"I told them this it wasn't going to be easy, but I told them this game was ours and we would win it," Brown said. "This one is really special."

Storm Woods ran for 118 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Beavers (9-4), who left stunned after looking as though they would wrap up their first 10-win season since 2006.

"Not to take anything away from Texas, that was a great team offensively and defensively," Wood said. "In the first half we had a great style of football. In the second half, Texas made some adjustments and I guess, they just wanted it more."

The victory was a dose of much-needed good news for Texas after coming into the game under a cloud of questions following the suspensions of backup quarterback Case McCoy and injured linebacker Jordan Hicks.

Ash, whose been pulled at times for McCoy this season, was 21 of 33 for 241 yards. Ash sputtered until the fourth quarter, when he went 9 for 11 for 146 yards. Even if there were doubts about Ash before then, Texas had no choice but to stick with him: the only backups were two redshirt freshmen who haven't taken a snap all season.

Brown announced the suspensions Friday but wouldn't reveal which players were sent home. A person with knowledge of the suspensions told The Associated Press the players were McCoy and Hicks, speaking on condition of anonymity because Texas wasn't releasing the names.

Brown addressed the suspensions during a previously schedule news conference and referred to a local TV report that police were investigating two unidentified Texas players in an alleged sexual assault at a San Antonio hotel. Police released a heavily redacted incident report that only identifies the suspects as two students, one 20 and the other 21.

Authorities are still investigating and no charges have been filed.

Brown said he would not address the suspensions further.

Oregon State quarterback Cody Vaz was 15 of 28 for 194 yards and two interceptions. The Beavers had negative 4 yards in the fourth quarter as they were muffled by the Longhorns defense that was led by Alex Okafor, who finished with 4 1/2 sacks.

"When we tried to just drop back and pass, it was difficult," Oregon State coach Mike Riley said. "That's why Cody had to just hang in there. It was very, very tough. He made some plays and some other plays didn't develop because he didn't just have time."

Although Goodwin's touchdown catch might have won the game, two spectacular Texas plays in an earlier 83-yard scoring drive handed the Longhorns momentum ? and a chance.

First was wide receiver Jaxon Shipley rescuing a pass sailing behind him with a dazzling one-handed grab at midfield. Ash made up for that off-target throw six plays later, slithering out of safety Anthony Watkins' near-certain sack and flinging the ball to Johnathan Gray, who then zipped down the sideline for a 15-yard scoring play that got the Longhorns to 27-24

The Longhorns played for a national championship in 2009. What's followed has been the shakiest of Brown's 15 years at Texas: a combined 22-16 record, an overhaul of assistant coaches and stubborn instability at quarterback following seven spoiled years with Heisman Trophy finalists Colt McCoy ? the suspended player's brother ? and Vince Young under center.

A surge of four consecutive victories late this season put this nine-win season in reach ? a benchmark that had been the ho-hum standard of the Brown era. It comes following an unexpected twist earlier this month, when school President Bill Powers went to his blog to write that Brown had his "full support" and would remain the head coach.

Powers cited an increase an "increase in media speculation" about Brown's future. It was published on his blog the same day Brown would not yet commit to Ash or Case McCoy as his starting quarterback for the Alamo Bowl.

French panel overturns 75 percent tax on ultrarich

(AP) ? Embattled French President Francois Hollande suffered a fresh setback Saturday when France's highest court threw out a plan to tax the ultrawealthy at a 75 percent rate, saying it was unfair.

In a stinging rebuke to one of Socialist Hollande's flagship campaign promises, the constitutional council ruled Saturday that the way the highly contentious tax was designed was unconstitutional. It was intended to hit incomes over ?1 million ($1.32 million).

The largely symbolic measure would have only hit a tiny number of taxpayers and brought in an estimated ?100 million to ?300 million - an insignificant amount in the context of France's roughtly ?85 billion deficit.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault was quick to respond, saying in a statement following the decision the government would resubmit the measure to take the court's concerns into account. The court's ruling took issue not with the size of the tax, but with the way it discriminated between households depending on how incomes were distributed among its members. A household with two earners each making under ?1 million would be exempt from the tax, while one with one earner making ?1.2 million would have to pay.

The French government approved the tax in its most recent budget, amid criticism by some that it would do little to stem the country's mounting fiscal problems and would drive away the wealthiest citizens. Hollande's popularity, meanwhile, has been tanking as the country's unemployment continued its rise for the 19th straight month.

In recent weeks, Gerard Depardieu ? France's most famous actor ? announced his intention to turn in his French passport and move to a village in a tax-friendly Belgium.

Want to own Shamu? SeaWorld files for $100 million IPO

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Looks like Shamu may soon be making a splash in the stock market.

SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. on Thursday filed for an initial public offering of stock that could raise $100 million.

That number is likely to change as the company's bankers gauge interest from investors.

Private equity firm Blackstone Group LP, which owns SeaWorld, will likely sell some of its stake in the deal, but will still own a majority of the voting power of the company's shares after the IPO, the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Orlando, Fla., company, known for its water shows featuring orca whales, dolphins and other animals, did not list a date for the offering. It plans to use the "SEAS" symbol.

Dec. 27, 2012

North Central Oregon Recreation Report from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife

FISHING

?

Weekend fishing opportunities:

?

  • Summer steelhead fishing is still available on the lower Deschutes. Fish are now well dispersed from the mouth upstream to the Warm Springs area.
  • Winter fishing can be good on several local reservoirs, as long as road conditions allow access ? check out Antelope Flat Reservoir, Haystack Reservoir and Ochoco Reservoir.
  • There are many great year-round fisheries for the fly angler, including the Metolius, Fall and Crooked and Deschutes rivers. Snow and cold temperatures can mean quiet, peaceful fishing. And hypothermia, so be prepared for winter conditions.

?

Buy hunting/fishing licenses now

Hunters and anglers are reminded to purchase 2013 hunting and fishing licenses before venturing into the field in the new year. They can be purchased on the ODFW website, at ODFW license agents and at ODFW offices that sell ODFW documents. Fees are not increasing in 2013. For more information, visit ODFW?s licenses and regulations page.

?

CENTRAL ZONE HUNTING

?

OPEN: UPLAND BIRD, WATERFOWL (see regs), COUGAR

?

REPORT HUNTS EVEN IF YOU WEREN?T SUCCESSFUL!

?

You need to complete a hunter harvest survey for each deer, elk, pronghorn, cougar, bear and turkey tag purchased?even if you weren?t successful or didn?t go hunting. Report online at www.reportmyhunt.com (or at ODFW?s website under Hunting) or call 1-866-947-6339. Hunters that fail to report 2012 deer and elk tags by the deadline (Jan. 31, 2013 for most hunts) will be fined $25 when they purchase a 2014 hunting license.

?

This penalty was put in place because after several years of ?mandatory? reporting with no penalty, just 41 percent of tags were reported on time last year. The information provided is critical for setting tag numbers and seasons?information that?s become more and more difficult to get through traditional phone surveys because hunters have moved, screened their calls, or don?t provide phone numbers.

Wolves and coyotes can look alike
Most wolves in the state today are in northeast Oregon but a few have dispersed further west and south. Wolves are protected by state and/or federal law and it is unlawful to shoot them. Coyote hunters need to take extra care to identify their target as wolves can look like coyotes, especially wolf pups in the mid-summer and fall. ODFW appreciates hunters? assistance to establish wolves? presence in Oregon; please report any wolf sightings or wolf sign to ODFW using the online reporting system.

Hunter orange required for youth

Don?t forget: hunters age 17 and under must wear a fluorescent orange upper garment OR hat when hunting upland game birds (except turkey) and game mammals (deer, elk, bear, cougar, pronghorn, goat, sheep, Western gray squirrel) with a firearm.

?

PRINEVILLE/OCHOCO WILDLIFE DISTRICT

?

Cougar ? Present throughout the Maury, Ochoco, and Grizzly units but are more likely near deer and elk herds. The Maury and Ochoco units are recommended because of their greater amounts of accessible public land. Remember cougars must be checked in at an ODFW office within 10 days of harvest. Please consult the synopsis for all required parts and be sure to call first to make an appointment.

?

Waterfowl, Valley Quail and Chukar - Seasons are open. Hunters are encouraged to check likely habitat areas on the Crooked River National Grasslands and the breaks of the John Day River system for opportunities. Waterfowl hunters will find opportunities limited as most birds in this area are closely associated with private lands where access may be difficult.

?

THE DALLES WILDLIFE DISTRICT

?

Cougar ? Hunters wishing to pursue cougar will find best success near areas of deer and elk concentrations and near recent cougar kills and calling. With periodic snow events, following fresh tracks can improve chances of locating a cougar. Successful hunters, remember you must check in cougar (hide and skull) and bear skull at an ODFW office within 10 days of harvest and bring them in unfrozen. It?s also a good idea to prop their mouths open with a stick after harvest for easier tissue sampling, teeth collection and tagging. See regulations for details.

?

Upland Bird ? Upland bird season is in full swing, and hunters can find some public access within the Deschutes and John rivers for chukar. Most of the pheasant and quail hunting in the district is on private lands, and permission is necessary. ODFW does facilitate some access through the Upland Cooperative Access Program. More information on this program can be attained on the department website, or by contacting the district at 541-296-4628.

?

Waterfowl ? Waterfowl are just starting to show up in the area. Access points are limited along the Columbia River; hunters must ensure that they are outside of any city limits or state parks boundaries. Good opportunities for Canada Geese exist throughout Sherman and southern Wasco counties on private lands.

?

WHITE RIVER WILDLIFE AREA

?

Vehicle Access: Most gates through the Wildlife Area closed Dec. 1 and will remain closed until April 1, 2013. As of January 1, 2013 new rules take effect that prohibits all recreational ATV use on the Wildlife Area, also camping will be only allowed in designated camping areas.

?

As of January 1, 2013 you will need a parking permit to use/park on the White River Wildlife Area along with other ODFW wildlife areas. visit ODFW?s Web site.?? ?

?

Cougar ? Open all year or until zone mortality quotas have been met. Look for areas that have recent deer and elk activity. Focus your efforts along migration routes, and along rim rocks and canyons. Look for fresh tracks or kills to increase success. Deer are down on the Wildlife Area for the winter so it is a good area to look for cougars.

?

Coyote ? Hunters should be looking in open areas along the eastern perimeter of the wildlife area. Open fields can provide good calling opportunities on the area.

?

Upland bird ? Chukar and Hungarian partridge can be found scattered throughout the area. Look on open ridges and rock out croppings. Valley quail can be found throughout the area along the creeks and ponds and there is a small population of Mountain quail on the area also but can be difficult to find.???

?

Waterfowl ? Waterfowl can be found using the area on ponds and occasionally in some of the freshly planted fields. Most of the waterfowl are on private lands.

?

?

CENTRAL ZONE VIEWING

?

Jefferson and Crook Counties

?

Prineville Area

?

Winter conditions are present and recreational users and their pets should dress and come equipped for snow, ice, and potentially dangerous driving conditions.

?

The Prineville Reservoir Wildlife Management Area (WMA) offers winter wildlife viewing opportunities. With recent frigid winter temperatures many ducks, geese, and other waterfowl have moved to more temperate areas. The WMA and the north side access road are now closed to motorized access. Walk in or bike access is allowed and provides vantage points to view migrating birds and resident wildlife.

?

Waterfowl hunters and trappers may also be using the area and all users are encouraged to wear bright hunter orange clothing. Most trappers avoid using the more traveled areas along the north shore, but could be using remote upland areas and the south shoreline which is difficult to access without a boat or canoe. Dog owners should use care when using remote uplands or the south shore. A map of the area is available at the ODFW?s Prineville Office and the Oregon State Park office located at the Prineville Reservoir State Park, or for more information, visit ODFW?s Web site. 12/18/12.

?

Deschutes County

?

Winter is an excellent time to view raptors around Deschutes County. Red-tailed hawks are one of the most numerous birds of prey and commonly seen on fence and power poles scanning meadows, sagebrush shrub steppe, and other open areas.

?

Travel conditions and accessibility to high mountain lakes is tentative and drivers should check conditions before heading out, but visitors to lakes such as Wickiup and Crane Prairie are likely to see common loons, Canada geese, American widgeon, green-winged teal, bufflehead, ring-necked ducks, northern shovelers, lesser scaup, common and Barrow?s goldeneye, multiple gull species, and various grebes including horned, eared, western, and Clark?s. In addition to the water birds, you can expect to see bald eagles, hermit thrushes, Williamson?s, hairy and black-backed woodpeckers, gray jay, northern flicker, mountain chickadee, red-breasted nuthatch, red crossbill, and many other species.

?

Other birding destinations to consider include Tumalo Reservoir (west of Highway 20 between Sister and Bend), Pelton Dam wildlife overlook and Lake Simstustus (Deschutes River northwest of Madras), and Hatfield Lakes (just north of the Bend airport).

?

Black-tailed jackrabbits can be seen in many areas where sagebrush abounds, and squirrels can still be observed conducting their winter activities on national forest and BLM lands, but expect to see less activity at higher elevations. Reptiles are now sequestered in underground winter quarters that protect them from freezing conditions. And although amphibians can be active at colder temperatures, they will be much harder to find until next spring. We?ll know spring is back when the chirrups of tree frogs can heard once again. 12/10/12

?

Wasco and Sherman counties

?

The Lower Deschutes River can provide ample wildlife viewing opportunities. California Bighorn Sheep are frequently observed in the canyon and can provide fantastic viewing this time of year. The best spot to view sheep is from the BLM access road just downstream and across the river from Sherar?s Falls (along Hwy 216). Other wildlife that may be seen along the river include the red-tailed hawk, American kestrel, Osprey, Golden and Bald eagles. Waterfowl are commonly observed on the river, and visitors can usually see many different songbirds and upland game birds that also call the canyon home. 12/21/12.

Charities Got Fewer but Bigger Online Gifts Last Week - Prospecting ...

The number of gifts people are making online slowed last week for the second time in a row, compared with this time a year ago, but because donors are giving much larger average gifts, charities are barely feeling a decline in donations.

The number of gifts fell 12 percent last week, following a decline of 6 percent in the second week of December.

Still, the total dollar value of online gifts dropped by less than 1 percent last week because the average online gift rose to $149.21, up from $131.92 in the same week of 2011.

Those figures, based on donations to 8,700 charities that accept donations through the nonprofit group Network for Good, come after a promising start?to the giving season last month and in initial days of December. The increases were triggered in part by the number of appeals for Superstorm Sandy and #GivingTuesday, an effort to increase charitable giving after Thanksgiving.

The lackluster fundraising returns in online giving this month seem to mirror the sluggish pace of holiday sales, which retailers say may be the worst since 2008.

But fundraising experts caution not to take too much from online-giving patterns because those gifts are a small percentage of what many charities raise.

What?s more, not all donations are suffering. Many donors are making large contributions this year because of fears that Congress won?t come to a deal on the fiscal cliff, allowing taxes to rise, and concerns that legislators could limit write-offs for charitable deductions next year.

Tell us what you?re seeing in the total value of donations your charity is raising in the last crucial days of the fundraising season.

See our interactive graphic to track year-end online giving by day.

Freelance Blog Articles Succinctly Written | About Freelance

Freelance Blog Articles Succinctly Written

Many different blog articles will be fully expected to be written perfectly during your freelance writing career; in business, blog articles will definitely be in your repertoire as freelancing professionals upkeep many biz blogs around the world.? Businesses are relatively easy to write blog articles about, yet writing business blog articles will nearly prepare you for writing business plans since many of the information found in business plans will go into your blog article.? Below we?ve constructed some time-saving tips for writing a business blog article quickly, accurately and with excellent client satisfaction potential.

Focus On Outline

Your outline will becomes the springboard which houses the remaining ideas you?ll research and write into each section.? Therefore, once you?ve gotten the format down, you?ll breeze through the remaining parts.? The outline could potentially look like this:

  • Title of business niche / idea / company being explored
  • Introduction paragraph with key facts
  • Body which will house your research, opinion and facts which should check out
  • Closing paragraph containing the basic wrap-up of everything written
  • Final text area citing all sources (unless done via deep link)

This outline is loose, meaning that different freelance writing clientele will have variances in expectations.

Prepare For Research

Business content will have exhaustive research, and spending one full day gathering data, facts and figures of interest should already be in your repertoire.? You?ll want to jot down notes along the way, and make sure to keep your citations in order for writing your content.? Once you?ve gathered enough information, you can rough draft the first part and make sure you feel comfortable with your findings.

Corporate blog content needs special attention because the facts can easily be proven, or instantly disproved, costing money and traffic.? Therefore, when writing about something that physically exists, or existed, make sure every word you speak is factually provable.? Your rough draft could very well be written over and over several dozen times.? This is expected, and not abnormal; always make sure your final draft is well-polished and never consist of stolen verbiage since we?re all aware that copywriting is not copy my writing ? or, so we hope, right?

If you already know that you?ll need time for research and asking for help from friends, never begin writing or researching when the time has run short because you?ll end up writing too quickly and miss important facts within your content which the client was looking for.? Instead of waiting until the last minute, make sure you allow at least 1-2 days for perfect writing which includes taking ample breaks and allowing for revisions if necessary.? This is general rule of thumb unless writing SEO content.

Write Outline Immediately

The outline of your articles needs written immediately when it?s fresh in your mind; even if you set the remaining task down for several days, you still need to complete the ?skeleton? of your business content.? This will allow for quick remembrance of your writing topic after resting for several hours.? The outline needs to simply conform to what your teacher told you would be necessary, including making your headings with Roman numerals or attractive subheadings.? Never try to write the outline immediately when it?s known to be due as this will render abysmal results ? along with zero payment.

Articles business professionals will assign freelancing professionals never have set page limits; therefore, you may end up writing 25 pages, or simply 1.? Regardless of size, always leave ample time for deep line editing which means sentence-level checking for proper grammar, subject usage and punctuation.? If you feel editing may be too difficult, hire someone outside your circle who can view your finished goods with fresh eyes.? This step is vital in making the proper corrections before turning in to client for payment.

Acupuncture: Holistic Approach to Natural Healing | Health and ...

acupuncture-feature

Acupuncture is a process of stimulating certain acupuncture points situated on the surface or very close to the skin.

There is a notion in Chinese medicine that life energy, known as Qi, flows in a regular pattern through and over the surface of the body via channels called meridians.

Each meridian is associated with one organ or a group of organs and nutrifies the blood vessels, flow, tissues and nervous pulse, improving functionality and promoting well-being. Also proper flow of Qi helps in maintaining an active balance of two opposite forces, Yin and Yang, to promote a salubrious state of body.
If this balance is disturbed or energy flow is obstructed or blocked, it could eventually pave the road to several diseases. One of the ancient and effective ways of unblocking the movement of Qi and reestablishing the normal energy flow through meridians is by needling at specific points in the body and this practice is called acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a process of stimulating certain acupuncture points situated on the surface or very close to the skin which have the tendency to modify various physiological acupuncture needle pointsand biochemical conditions for achieving sound health. This practice dates back around 2000 years when it was first performed in China. It is one of the disciplines constituting the Traditional Chinese Medicine and has great efficacy in treating various health ailments, boosting the immune system and maintaining a complete harmony of body and mind.

How Acupuncture works

Acupuncture works with the Qi or energy of the body directly. People who practice this treatment believe that a person becomes susceptible to illness if the regular flow of energy throughout the body is depleted or struck or weakened due to factors such as biological, mechanical, chemical, physical, mental or hereditary and by puncturing over the acupoints this obstruction can be easily removed. Acupoints are areas near or over the surface of skin that are electrically sensitive.
By inserting pointed, stainless steel needles at such points, various sensory receptors are stimulated and also improved nervous signals are generated to hypothalamus-pituitary glands which release natural pain killing chemicals of the body, endorphins and neurotransmitters.

This helps in making the body stronger and more immune to disease and relieves from various pains like back pain, head ache, arthritis and many other conditions. The needles are slightly inserted, not pinched, into the skin which makes it a painless, safe and effective treatment of many conditions.

Acupuncture benefits

Performed by certified acupuncture practitioners, acupuncture has now become a part of conventional medical procedures for the treatment of several diseases and health conditions, promoting both physical and mental well being. The spectrum of benefits offered by acupuncture is very vast and includes wide miscellanea of disorders.

Although best known for its pain controlling ability, this Chinese treatment can be used for treating respiratory disorders like asthma, sinusitis, bronchitis and common cold. It also benefits toothache, musculoskeletal and neurological disorders and eye problems such as conjunctivitis, cataract and nearsightedness.

Acupuncture can be effective in eliminating or reducing the need of taking drugs to regulate pain or symptoms of certain health conditions. It also stimulates faster recovery, improved circulation and lower symptoms of stress. ?Since it strengthens the immune system of the body naturally, the body becomes less vulnerable to infections, colds and flu. Other benefits include relief from post surgical nausea, vomiting, psychological or emotional imbalances, eating disorders, depression and rejuvenation of natural body energy.

More than a cure, acupuncture is used as preventive medicine that forestalls illness from occurring. Since it is safe and involved no side effects, people even without any disorder can receive acupuncture to maintain proper flow of energy through the body and promote a perfect sense of being healthy, strong and active. It is also used, side by side, with conventional medical treatments for various acute and chronic diseases.

Speedy boson machine could bridge classic and quantum computing

18 hrs.

A new type of machine could rival quantum computers in exceeding the power of classical computers, researchers say.

Quantum computers?rely on the bizarre properties of atoms and the other construction blocks of the universe. The world is a fuzzy place at its very smallest levels ? in this realm where?quantum physics?dominates, things can seemingly exist in two places at once or spin in opposite directions at the same time.

The new computers rely on "boson" particles, and resemble quantum computers, which differ from traditional computers in important ways. Normal computers represent data as ones and zeroes, binary digits known as bits that are expressed by flicking switch-like transistors on or off. Quantum computers, however, use quantum bits, or qubits (pronouced "cue-bits"), that can be on and off at the same time, a state known as "superposition."

This allows the machines to carry out two calculations simultaneously. Quantum physics permits such behavior because it allows for particles that can exist in two places at once or spin in opposite directions at the same time.?[Experiment Demonstrates Possibility of Quantum Internet]

Flash interactive: How quantum computers work

In principle, quantum computers could solve certain problems much faster than can?classical computers, because the quantum machines could run through every possible combination at once. A quantum computer with 300 qubits could run more calculations in an instant than there are atoms in the universe.

However, keeping qubits in superposition is challenging, and the problem grows more difficult as more qubits are involved. As such, building quantum computers that are more powerful than classical computers has proven very difficult.

Now, though, two independent teams of scientists have built a novel kind of device known as a boson-sampling computer. Described as a bridge between classical and quantum computers, these machines also make use of the bizarre nature of quantum physics. Although boson-sampling computers theoretically offer less power than quantum computers are capable of producing, the machines should still, in principle, out-perform classical computers in certain problems.

In addition, a boson-sampling computer does not require qubits. As such, "it's technologically far simpler to create than building a full-scale quantum computer," said researcher Matthew Broome, a quantum physicist at the University of Queensland in Australia.

Boson-sampling computers are actually a specialized kind of quantum computer (which is known more formally as a universal quantum computer).

"The main difference between boson-sampling computers and universal quantum computers is that boson-sampling quantum computers can't solve a universal set of problems like universal quantum computers can," Broome said. "But they are still conjectured to be able to solve problems that would be massively intractable for classical computers. Boson sampling computers are an intermediate model of a quantum computer."

Boson-sampling computers are not based on qubits, but on particles called?bosons. "In our case, we use photons," said researcher Ian Walmsley, a quantum physicist at the University of Oxford in England. Photons are the packets of energy that make up light, and are one type of boson.

Gallery: What the heck is a boson?

Broome and Walmsley were in separate groups that each devised a boson-sampling computer, based off concepts first described by theoretical computer scientist Scott Aaronson at MIT. The computers involve multiple devices that can each generate single photons. The photons are inserted into a network where they can interact with one another. They emerge from outputs equipped with sensors to analyze the particles.

The task of calculating which outputs these photons will emerge from, an operation known as boson sampling, grows well beyond the capabilities of classical computers the more photons are involved. The new computers accurately resolved what paths the photons would take ? three photons with Broome and his colleagues' machine and four in Walmsley and his collaborators' device.

Since boson-sampling computing is in its infancy, it remains uncertain whether these computers can solve problems beyond boson sampling. Still, this research suggests that computers based on quantum physics could indeed tackle problems beyond the reach of classical computers.

Year in Science: Higgs boson takes the prize

Previously, there was nothing to say "that anything you can do on a quantum computer you can't do on a normal computer, which leaves in question the necessity for quantum computers," Broome said. "Now, with boson sampling, we're coming up with machines based on quantum physics that can attack problems strongly believed to be intractable for classical computers."

In the future, "it would be great to push these computers toward more photons to tackle problems that would be challenging to simulate on normal computers," study coauthor Walmsley added. Using about 20 to 30 photons would?be a problem?beyond the capabilities of classical computers.

Both research teams detailed their findings online Dec. 20 in the journal Science.

Shoppers found bigger sales, smaller crowds

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shoppers who waited until the final days before Christmas were rewarded with big bargains and thinner crowds. But their strategic deal hunting reflects why stores may not ring up the sales they want for the season.

Although fresh data on the holiday shopping season won't be out until Christmas, analysts expect growth from last year to be relatively modest. Several factors have dampened shoppers' spirits, including fears that the economy could fall off the "fiscal cliff," triggering tax increases and spending cuts early next year.

On Christmas Eve, Taubman Centers, which operates 28 malls across the country, reported a "very strong weekend," with shoppers taking advantage of all the sales. But many last-minute shoppers across the nation in cities such as New York, Atlanta and Indianapolis said they were spending less than they did last year and taking advantage of big discounts ranging from 30 to 70 percent off.

Kris Betzold, 40, of Carmel, Ind., was out at the Fashion Mall at Keystone in Indianapolis on Monday looking for deals on toys, and said she's noticed the sales are "even better now than they were at Thanksgiving." But she said the economy has prompted her and her husband to be more frugal this year.

"We under budgeted ourselves by $400 for Christmas because we just wanted to put that money back in savings," she said.

Dianne Ashford, 40, who works for a film production company and was at the Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta on Monday, said she was spending $500 on gifts this year, down from the $1,000 she normally spends.

"Times are hard," said Ashford, who was finishing up shopping on Christmas Eve because she's been working six days a week. The best deal she found this year was a guitar for her mother, half off at $79

Other last-minute shoppers said they were holding off as much as possible for even bigger post-holiday sales.

Chris Ailes, a 37-year-old TV producer, was at the Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta on Christmas Eve to pick up some last-minute gifts for his mom and grandmother. But with the economy so shaky in recent years, he and his family have talked about cutting back on spending, even though they all have jobs. Christmas hadn't yet arrived, but he was already thinking about the discounts that would soon follow.

"That's when the sales are going on," he said.

At Macy's in New York, shopper Maureen Whyte had a similar game plan in mind. Whyte, a 33-year-old who works for an insurance company, was picking up some last-minute stocking stuffers for her kids. For some toys, however, she was holding off for the post-Christmas sales and her kids understood why.

"I told them, 'Whatever Mommy didn't get you, you'll get after this week,'" she said, noting that her 5- and 10-year-old are fine waiting as long as they know they'll eventually get their toys.

That's grim news for retailers, with many counting on the holiday shopping season for as much as 40 percent of their annual sales. Although the week after Christmas is considered part of the season as well, by that time retailers are backed into a corner since it's their last chance to get rid of items that have been sitting on shelves for months. The steep discounts during that time mean sales are less profitable.

ShopperTrak, which counts foot traffic and its own proprietary sales numbers from 40,000 retail outlets across the country, on Wednesday cut its forecast for holiday spending down to 2.5 percent growth to $257.7 billion, from prior expectations of a 3.3 percent rise.

Online, sales rose just 8.4 percent to $48 billion from Oct. 28 through Saturday, according to a measure by MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse. That is below the online sales growth of between 15 to 17 percent seen in the prior 18-month period, according to the data service, which tracks all spending across all forms of payment, including cash.

Marshall Cohen, chief research analyst at the market research firm NPD Inc., said retailers will have to be more aggressive than usual with discounts on the days after Christmas to get shoppers to spend. That could mean some stores will slash prices by as much as 80 percent to clear inventory in coming days and make shoppers believe sales are a "once in a lifetime opportunity."

"Consumers are going to be rewarded for waiting until after the holidays," he said.

Nanofibers clean sulfur from fuel

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

Sulfur compounds in petroleum fuels have met their nano-structured match.

University of Illinois researchers developed mats of metal oxide nanofibers that scrub sulfur from petroleum-based fuels much more effectively than traditional materials. Such efficiency could lower costs and improve performance for fuel-based catalysis, advanced energy applications and toxic gas removal.

Co-led by Mark Shannon, a professor of mechanical science and engineering at the U. of I. until his death this fall, and chemistry professor Prashant Jain, the researchers demonstrated their material in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Sulfur compounds in fuels cause problems on two fronts: They release toxic gases during combustion, and they damage metals and catalysts in engines and fuel cells. They usually are removed using a liquid treatment that adsorbs the sulfur from the fuel, but the process is cumbersome and requires that the fuel be cooled and reheated, making the fuel less energy efficient.

To solve these problems, researchers have turned to solid metal oxide adsorbents, but those have their own sets of challenges. While they work at high temperatures, eliminating the need to cool and re-heat the fuel, their performance is limited by stability issues. They lose their activity after only a few cycles of use.

Previous studies found that sulfur adsorption works best at the surface of solid metal oxides, so graduate student Mayank Behl, from Jain's group, and Junghoon Yeom, then a postdoctoral researcher in Shannon's group, set out to create a material with maximum surface area. The solution: tiny grains of zinc titanate spun into nanofibers, uniting high surface area, high reactivity and structural integrity in a high-performance sulfur adsorbent.

The nanofiber material is more reactive than the same material in bulk form, enabling complete sulfur removal with less material, allowing for a smaller reactor. The material stays stable and active after several cycles. Furthermore, the fibrous structure grants the material immunity from the problem of sintering, or clumping, that plagues other nano-structured catalysts.

"Our nanostructured fibers do not sinter," Jain said. "The fibrous structure accommodates any thermophysical changes without resulting in any degradation of the material. In fact, under operating conditions, nanobranches grow from the parent fibers, enhancing the surface area during operation."

Jain's group will continue to investigate the enhanced properties of nanofiber structures, hoping to gain an atomic-level understanding of what makes the material so effective.

"We are interested in finding out the atomic sites on the surface of the material where the hydrogen sulfide adsorbs," said Jain, who is also affiliated with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the U. of I. "If we can know the identity of these sites, we could engineer an even more efficient adsorbent material. The atomic or nanoscale insight we gain from this material system could be useful to design other catalysts in renewable energy and toxic gas removal applications."

Russia insists it stands by Syria's Assad, despite earlier comments

Russia today denied that it had changed its policy towards the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a day after a high-ranking Russian official admitted publicly for the first time that the Syrian government may fall.

A spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said today that Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, in comments widely published yesterday that acknowledged the possible victory of Syria's rebels, was only reiterating Russia's official position of supporting a political end to the conflict, reports RIA Novosti.

...[O]n Friday Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich was dismissive [of reports that Russia was backing away from Assad]. ?I saw the US State Department spokeswoman citing [Bodganov] and praising how Moscow has finally woken up and is changing its position,? he said.

?But we never slept. And we never changed our position, and will not do so in the future,? Lukashevich said at a press briefing in Moscow.

RIA Novosti writes that the ministry said Mr. Bogdanov "has not made any specific statements for the press on Syria in recent days," suggesting that his statements were not intended to reflect Russian policy.

RELATED ? What is Russia thinking on Syria? A brief guide

Russia has been a staunch supporter of Assad's since the conflict began last year, and before yesterday had not countenanced the possibility of his fall. Bogdanov's comments -- made at a Kremlin hearing in which he addressed the ongoing conflict in Syria and its possible outcome, reports Reuters ? thus marked what was seen as a significant shift.

"An opposition victory can't be excluded, unfortunately, but it's necessary to look at the facts: There is a trend for the government to progressively lose control over an increasing part of the territory," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said during hearings at a Kremlin advisory body. ...

Bogdanov also reaffirmed Russia's call for a compromise, saying it would take the opposition a long time to defeat the regime and Syria would suffer heavy casualties.

"The fighting will become even more intense, and you will lose tens of thousands and, perhaps, hundreds of thousands of people," he said. "If such a price for the ouster of the president seems acceptable to you, what can we do? We, of course, consider it absolutely unacceptable."

Bogdanov's comments were taken by many as a sign of the Kremlin's weakening support for Assad. US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said she "commend[ed] the Russian Government for finally waking up to the reality and acknowledging that the regime?s days are numbered."

But Andrew Weiss, formerly of the US state and defense departments, wrote in a commentary for Foreign Policy that it was more important to "Watch what the Kremlin does, not what it says." Mr. Weiss argues that there has been little evidence that Russia is backing away from Assad.

Indeed, the evidence runs in the opposite direction. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Sunday said, "We are not conducting any negotiations on the fate of Assad. ... All attempts to portray things differently are unscrupulous, even for diplomats of those countries which are known to try to distort the facts in their favor." Other official spokesmen never miss an opportunity to condemn the militarization of the conflict, foreign interference in Syria's domestic affairs, and even NATO's plan to provide Patriot missiles to Turkey to help guard its airspace against Syrian incursions. And both Time magazine and ProPublica have reported recently on Syrian skullduggery to arrange continued imports of Russian attack helicopters and Russian-printed Syrian banknotes, which are helping keep the shaky Syrian economy afloat.

And the Guardian notes that while Assad may be on the back foot, he is still far from being toppled, even if Russia is starting to withdraw its support.

"Assad's situation is very difficult," said one senior Arab source in the region. "But he has a lot of strength. He is still getting arms and finance from Iran and his military capability is still robust." ...

What appears to have undergone a subtle change in recent weeks is the attitude of Russia and Iran. According to an observer closely familiar with recent high level diplomatic exchanges over Syria, Russia is said to be moving gradually towards accepting there may need to be a third alternative to the scenarios in which either Assad survives or is replaced by an unknown quantity involving jihadist groups.

Vodka saves elephants from death in Siberian frost

MOSCOW (AP) ? Vodka saved two circus elephants in Russia from the deadly Siberian cold.

Emergency ministry spokesman Alexander Davydov said Friday that the elephants were in a trailer that caught fire Thursday outside the city of Novosibirsk, forcing trainers to take them out into the bitter cold before another truck arrived to deliver them to a warm gym at a local community college.

The Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported that trainer Leonid Labo had the animals, aged 45 and 48, drink 10 liters (2.6 gallons) of vodka diluted in warm water ? and a veterinarian said later that only the tips of their ears were frostbitten.

Novosibisk zoo director Rostislav Shilo told the daily that the vodka saved the animals from frostbite and pneumonia, without harming or even intoxicating them.

Recreational marijuana should not be top federal priority: Obama

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama says federal authorities should not target recreational marijuana use in two Western states where it has been made legal given limited government resources and growing public acceptance of the controlled substance.

His first comments on the issue come weeks after Washington state and Colorado voters supported legalizing pot, or cannabis, last month in ballot measures that stand in direct opposition of federal law.

"It does not make sense from a prioritization point of view for us to focus on recreational drug users in a state that has already said that under state law that's legal," he told ABC News in part of an interview released on Friday.

"At this point (in) Washington and Colorado, you've seen the voters speak on this issue. And, as it is, the federal government has a lot to do when it comes to criminal prosecutions," Obama said.

The Department of Justice has said pot remains a federally controlled substance and states have been looking for guidance from Washington on how it will handle the conflict with state laws.

Medical use of the substance is legal in 18 U.S. states. But federal officials have still continued to crack down on some providers in those states.

Pot remains an illegal narcotic under U.S. law, but Washington and Colorado became the first states in the nation to legalize recreational marijuana use on November 6. A similar effort in Oregon failed.

Obama called the situation "a tough problem, because Congress has not yet changed the law." He told ABC that "what we're going to need to have is a conversation about" how to reconcile federal and state laws, and that he has asked U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to examine the issue.

In his 1995 memoir, "Dreams of My Father," Obama admitted to regularly smoking pot in high school. The father of two told ABC that he would not go so far as to say pot should be legalized altogether. There are also concerns about drug use in children and violence, he told ABC, according to its website.

"I want to discourage drug use," he added.

The new measures in Washington and Colorado, which already permit medical marijuana use, allow possession of up to an ounce of the substance for private use. They also will regulate and tax sales at special stores for those aged 21 and older.

U.S. agency gives RIM another shot, tests new BlackBerry

TORONTO (Reuters) - A U.S. federal agency that has been phasing out the BlackBerry in favor of the iPhone said on Thursday it would test Research In Motion's new BB10 smartphones, fueling a fresh spurt in RIM's shares ahead of the new line's launch.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will begin a pilot program early next year to test the new line and the software to manage them on its network.

The news, which sent RIM shares up more than 6 percent on Thursday morning, extends a weeks-long rally that has pushed the stock to its highest close in more than seven months.

Investors have warmed to the stock - which had lost about 75 percent of its value in the last two years - on evidence that the make-or-break BB10 line is gaining traction with RIM's bread-and-butter customers in the weeks before its January 30 launch.

RIM, a one-time pioneer in the smartphone industry, has lost market share in recent years to Apple's iPhone and devices powered by Google's market-leading Android operating system. Even RIM's core business customers, who once used BlackBerry devices almost exclusively, have been defecting in droves.

BB10 represents Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM's best hope of persuading both corporations and government users to stick with its smartphones, long valued for their strong security features. RIM promises the new line, powered by the BlackBerry 10 operating system, will perform more smoothly and with more speed than previous BlackBerrys.

ICE is one of the customers it hopes to win over.

"Our priority is to ensure that ICE and all government agencies understand the full capabilities of the new BlackBerry 10 platform and how it can help them meet their mobility needs today and in the future," said Scott Totzke, RIM's senior vice president of BlackBerry Security.

ICE in October announced plans to end a long relationship with RIM, saying that its aging lineup of BlackBerry devices could "no longer meet the mobile technology needs of the agency." At the time, ICE said it would buy iPhones for about 17,600 employees.

A spokeswoman for the agency said on Thursday ICE is not backing away from either Apple or RIM.

"Given the nature of a rapidly evolving marketplace for mobile computing and the rising expectations of our users ... the pilot with RIM is a prudent technology management practice," said Barbara Gonzalez, the agency's press secretary.

Gonzalez said the agency is developing mobile applications for law enforcement and it is looking into how BlackBerry 10 may be able to provide mobility solutions in the future.

"ICE and RIM have had a long and good relationship, and we plan to continue that relationship," she said.

SECURITY ADVANTAGE

Last month, RIM said it had won a much-coveted U.S. government security clearance for its BlackBerry 10 devices and its new enterprise management platform.

The company said it was the first time a BlackBerry product had won Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification ahead of launch.

The certification, from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, is one of the minimum criteria for products used by U.S. government agencies and other regulated industries that store, transfer, share and disseminate sensitive information.

The stamp of approval gives many of RIM's security-conscious enterprise clients confidence that data on smartphones running BlackBerry 10 can be properly secured and encrypted.

RIM, which has begun beta testing its mobile device management software BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 with a handful of key enterprise customers, said ICE will be one of the first government organizations to pilot the BlackBerry 10 devices.

SHARES SURGE

RIM shares closed on Thursday 4.1 percent higher at $13.86, after rising as high as $14.16 on the Nasdaq. Its Toronto-listed shares ended the day 3.7 percent higher at C$13.63.

A day earlier RIM shares rallied after favorable comments by Eric Jackson, a long-time bear on RIM's stock. In a piece published on Thestreet.com, he wrote that he now has a long position in RIM, dropping his bets that the stock would drop.

Jackson said the positive sentiment building in RIM's stock is unlikely to dissipate any time soon. He said many of RIM's 80 million subscribers are likely to upgrade to the BB10 when the new devices are launched.

The stock has more than doubled in price since September 24, when RIM's shares were trading slightly above the $6 level.
