Iran judiciary vetoes Ahmadinejad prison visit again

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's judicial authorities have again denied a request by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to visit Evin prison where his top media advisor is serving time, Iranian media reported on Wednesday, in another sign the president's power is on the wane.

Ahmadinejad's request was seen as linked to the detention of his press advisor Ali Akbar Javanfekr who was jailed for six months in September for publishing an article deemed offensive to public decency.

The judiciary turned down his first request to visit on Sunday, saying it was not in Iran's best interests for him to spend time on such a visit at a time when the country is facing an economic crisis. Ahmadinejad replied accusing the judiciary of unconstitutional conduct.

"Taking into account the recent letter and circumstances, on no account will a visit to Evin prison be allowed without coordination," Sadeq Larijani, the head of the judiciary, said on Wednesday, Iran's student news agency reported.

"The notion that the president has the right to supervise other powers (the judiciary) is completely false," he said.

Ahmadinejad's influence within Iran's factionalized power structure has weakened since a bitter feud erupted in public in 2011 over the supreme clerical leader's reinstatement of the intelligence minister whom Ahmadinejad had sacked.

The president is also facing growing criticism for exacerbating harsh Western sanctions over Iran's nuclear program with misguided economic policies.

In the coming weeks, he may be summoned before hostile MPs for the second time this year to again explain his performance.

Apple unwraps iPad mini to take on Amazon, Google

Its higher-than-expected price tag of $329 that Wall Street fears could curb demand.

The 7,9 inch iPad mini marks the iPhone-maker's first foray into the smaller-tablet segment. Apple hopes to beat back incursions onto its home turf of consumer electronics hardware, while safeguarding its lead in a larger tablet space - one that even deep-pocketed rivals like Samsung Electronics have found tough to penetrate.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook and marketing chief Phil Schiller took the wraps off the new tablet, which essentially has most of the functions and features of the full-size iPad but in a smaller package.

Priced at $329 for a Wi-Fi only model, the iPad mini is a little costlier than predicted but some analysts see that as a bid to retain premium pricing levels. Others fear the gadget will lure buyers away from Apple's $499 flagship 10-inch iPad, while proving ineffective in combating the threat of Amazon's $199 Kindle Fire and Google?s Nexus 7, both of which are sold at or near cost.

"Apple has always been a premium hardware manufacturer. I's basically a hardware company and they don't have Google advertising or Amazon's online store to fall back on,? said Destination Wealth Management CEO Michael Yoshikami.

"But people are happy to pay a premium because it's quality hardware, and the ecosystem (of content and apps) cannot be underestimated."

JMP Securities analyst Alex Gauna said, however, "It's coming in the range that most were grumbling about and that, quite frankly, we're a little bit concerned about."

"It's a little confusing at this juncture to try and figure out how it fits into the line-up. Is it going to cannibalise the more expensive iPad?" he said.

"It is worth noting that there are zero-margin products out there competing with them now ... and that is presenting some challenges to Apple."

The iPad was launched in 2010 by late Apple visionary Steve Jobs and since then it has taken a big chunk out of PC sales, upending the industry and reinventing mobile computing with its apps-based model, often called an ecosystem.

A smaller tablet is the first device to be added to Apple's compact portfolio under Cook, who took over from Jobs just before his death a year ago. Analysts said it may have been Google and Amazon that helped influence the decision.

In a surprise move, Apple also announced on Tuesday a fourth-generation full-sized iPad just six months after unveiling a third generation device to much fanfare. The latest tablet, which again sells for $499, is faster and slimmer and comes just days before Microsoft is due to show off its own Surface tablet.

Apple also unveiled thinner MacBook Pro laptops, including a 13-inch Retina display.

Weight impresses

Frank Gillett, an analyst with Forrester who attended the event, said he was impressed with the lightness of the iPad mini, with which he had a chance to play after the event.

"Apple went for the high end of what people have been thinking of," Gillett said, adding Amazon and Google may have to adjust their own product lineups to compete with the iPad mini.

Underscoring how competition is intensifying, Schiller painstakingly outlined how the iPad mini matched up against the Nexus 7. At the event in San Jose's luxurious California Theatre, the marketing honcho detailed feature by feature why he thought the iPad mini superior.

It is unusual for Apple to single out a specific competitor in its product launches. In another rarity for a company that tightly controls events, it live-streamed its presentation to Apple devices such as the iPad and Macintosh computers.

"Theirs is made of plastic," Schiller said, referring to the Android tablet. "The entire Android product is thicker and heavier."

Schiller later defended Apple's pricing of the iPad mini, telling reporters he expects consumers to recognise quality and pay for it.

The Kindle and Nexus 7 have grabbed a chunk of the lower end of the tablet market and proved demand for a pocket-sized slate exists. Those companies' tablets "the most successful other than Apple's" have forced Apple into a space it has avoided and at times derided, analysts say.

Amazon's 7-inch Kindle Fire released last year for $199 was one of the hottest-selling holiday gadgets. It pressured Amazon's margins but potentially garnered millions of new high-spending customers for the online retailer.

The Internet retailer has now launched its second-generation Kindle Fire HD, which it says is the "best-selling product across all of Amazon worldwide," based on undisclosed US sales figures and international preorders.

Google's Nexus 7 tablet, built by Asian manufacturer Asustek, won top marks from reviewers and quickly ran out of stock after its July launch.

All three companies will be vying to get their devices on shopping lists during the US holiday season, which traditionally starts next month.

Surveys conducted ahead of Tuesday?s news suggested some consumers had hoped for a more affordable Apple mini tablet.

The "starting sweet spot" for the tablet would be in the $249-$299 range, according to a survey of more than a thousand consumers by Baird Equity Research.

Price is key

Jobs famously derided the 7-inch screen, saying such a device should come with sandpaper so users can file down their fingers. But an internal email revealed during a patent trial showed he turned more favorable to the idea by early 2011.

Apple has sold 100 million iPads so far, with the device accounting for 26% of Apple's fiscal third-quarter revenue.

But analysts are concerned now about erosion of Apple?s industry leading margins as it takes on the Kindle Fire. It earned gross margins of 23% to 32% on US iPad sales between October 2010 and the end of March 2012, according to a July court filing by Apple.

Amazon's first Kindle Fire just about breaks even after manufacturing costs, according to IHS iSuppli estimates, and Google has said its Nexus 7 is being sold at cost.

"The pricing may limit sales. From a profitability perspective though, I think at $330 Apple is still getting adequate gross margins on the sales," said Morningstar analyst Brian Colello. "But at that price point it may limit adoption and unit volumes."

Apple's shares ended regular trading down 3,2% at $613,36, after gaining 4% on Monday in the run-up to the event.

Air India 'hijack': Sounded alert after passengers threatened me with physical assault, says woman pilot

The commander of the Air India flight whose cockpit was reportedly stormed by irate passengers at the Trivandrum airport on October 18 has said that the passengers had threatened her with physical assault.

"The pilots and crew were held hostage, not allowed water and restroom breaks and criminally intimidated for over five hours," Rupali Waghmare, the flight commander has stated in a First Information Report(FIR) filed with the Kerala police.

None of the seven Central Industrial Security Force(CISF) personnel who stood on the tarmac around the aircraft intervened to help, Waghmare said in a detailed letter sent to the Commissioner of Security in the Bureau of Civil Aviation and Security on October 21, three days after the incident.

A copy of this letter is with India Today.

According to Waghmare, a group of passengers repeatedly assaulted the aircraft crew and a woman cabin-in-charge while trying to barge into the flight deck. They were insistent that Rupali Waghmare and her crew only fly them back to Cochin.

The Abu Dhabi-Cochin flight was diverted to Trivandrum due to bad weather at 6.40 am. Waghmare and her crew requested the passengers to deplane while a fresh flight crew took them back to Cochin.

Waghmare recounted the exact sequence of events that led her to sound the hijack distress warning. The pilots made frantic, but futile, calls to Air India.

Waghmare then scribbled a note for the CISF and threw it out of the cockpit window because an Air India security staff said the CISF would not act without the flight commander's authorisation.

There was, however, no response from either the air traffic control or the CISF despite eight to ten calls made to them over two hours. Meanwhile, the passengers pushed aside the flight crew and entered the cockpit screaming they would kill the pilots if they did not fly them to Cochin.

"One of the passengers looked at me and said 'we are coming and that we are going to do the wrong thing to you'," she wrote in the letter.
Fearing for her personal safety, Waghmare transmitted the code 7700-the international hijack warning-through the transponder.

Since the aircraft was deemed to be 'in flight' when the incident took place, she had acted under the provisions of the International Civil Aviation Organisation(ICAO) to protect the aircraft and passengers.

She has requested the BCAS to advise the Kerala government to have the incident investigated by a Class I police officer and recommended the severest punishment for the guilty.

Hate crimes rise as Greece economy sinks

With the Greek unemployment rate at 25 percent, anti-foreigner sentiment is growing. NBC News' Andy Eckardt meets politician Ilias Panagiotaros of the far-right Golden Dawn party and Ali Rahimi, an Afghan national who was attacked by a mob and told to leave Greece.

By Andy Eckardt, NBC News

ATHENS, Greece -- Ali Rahimi was?enjoying a warm Greek evening, chatting away with two friends, when a mob of 15 people approached and asked where they were from.

"I told them that I am from Afghanistan and they said that it is time for me to go back to my country," the 28-year-old asylum-seeker told NBC News.

Rahimi attempted to run away but was cornered, beaten, hit over the head with a bottle and stabbed in the chest and back by three assailants in the entryway of his Athens apartment building.?

"When police arrived they called an ambulance, but then told me that they could not help me any further and left," Rahimi recalled, explaining how he only realized how serious his injuries were after spotting blood running out from under his T-shirt during the brutal attack on Sept. 17, 2011.

Andy Eckardt / NBC News

Ilias Panagiotaros of Greece's far-right Golden Dawn Party.

Rahimi's case does not appear to be unique. As the euro zone debt crisis leaves Greece grappling with a 25 percent overall unemployment rate, activists say they have noted an increase in the number of hate crimes reported.

'It is virtually impossible to find a job': Brain drain is new Greek tragedy

Far-right populism has also found fertile ground in the near-bankrupt country,?where the economy is forecast to contract by 7 percent this year and every second youth is out of work.

Nazi-style salutes
The Golden Dawn party ? no more than an extremist fringe group when it was established in the late 1980s and which has been branded "neo-Nazi" by its opponents ? has been gaining support amid the country's deteriorating economic situation.

Citing a poll by?VPRC which appeared in the "Ellada Avrio" newspaper on Friday, Reuters reported:

Alkis Konstantinidis / EPA, file

Migrants living in Athens are held during a Police ID-check operation in central Athens, Greece, in this 6 August file picture.

Backing for the ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn, which has been linked to a rise in attacks against migrants in recent months, stood at 14 percent, double their take in June elections that gave the party a foothold in parliament. That would make the group the country's third largest party.

The party's rabidly anti-immigrant message has stuck a chord with many voters as EU/IMF imposed austerity propels unemployment levels to a record 25 percent.

Golden Dawn denies it is neo-Nazi but bears a Swastika-like emblem and its supporters have been seen giving Nazi-style salutes. The party's leader, Nikolaos Mihaloliakos, has denied the Holocaust occurred while one lawmaker, Eleni Zaroulia, called immigrants "sub-humans" in parliament on Thursday.

Reuters added that the opinion poll showed that "Greeks' frustration with their political leaders has grown as the coalition prepares to push through the new round of austerity measures to appease [foreign] lenders and secure more bailout aid and keep the country afloat."

Over the past decade, Greece has become the major gateway into the European Union for illegal immigrants and asylum-seekers from Asia and Africa.

'Growing despair'
Experts estimate that between 800,000 and 1 million undocumented migrants now live in Greece, a country with a population of nearly 11 million.

"The rapid increase of illegal immigration in the past years, growing despair over the ailing economy and a loss of trust in our political leadership have fueled public anger and given way to dangerous populism in the country," says Loukas Tsoukalis, head of Greek think-tank Eliamep.

Riot police use tear gas and stun grenades in response to fire bombs and bottles thrown by protesters during a demonstration against austerity cuts in Greece. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Campaigning on a message of ultra-nationalism and fierce anti-immigrant policies, Golden Dawn won 18 seats in parliament during June's national election.

"We have to protect 10 million Greeks that are suffering from the very bad economy and from the killings, rapes, shootings and everything else that all illegal immigrants are doing to this country," Ilias Panagotiaros, a Golden Dawn politician and a member of Greek parliament, told NBC News.

A poll last month found that the popularity of Nikos Mihalolioakos, head of the Golden Dawn party, has climbed to 22 percent, up 8 points from May.

However, it is not just a harsh political message that has been drawing support for Golden Dawn.

In an attempt to build an image of social responsibility, followers of the movement have taken up the roles of what some Greeks call "a crumbling public support system."

'For Greeks only'
Last month, members of Golden Dawn set up booths in a central Athens square to distribute groceries and collect blood donations. "For Greeks only" was the message, after visitors were asked to provide identification of Greek citizenship.

"Golden Dawn has been taking advantage of the growing despair, presents itself as a protector of the weak and vulnerable," analyst Tsoukalis says.?"In dangerous neighborhoods they have offered to escort old ladies to the grocery store around the corner."

Rising political and socio-economic discontent, nurtured by a surge of crime rates in major Greek cities, have also led to widespread public acceptance that followers of Golden Dawn sometimes substitute for police and other government officials.

While Greece gears up for more protests against austerity cuts, the health care system is in tatters with little cash for drugs or doctors. ITV's James Mates reports.

A video shot in early September shows members of Golden Dawn checking work permits at a local market in Rafina, where migrant vendors sell their goods. Minutes later, several people with black Golden Dawn T-shirts and Greek flags moved in and destroyed the stands.

"We are going to defend our country, our history, our religion, our culture," Golden Dawn's Panagiotaros adds. He is also one of the founders of a ultra-nationalistic football fan club called?Galazia Stratia, or Blue Army, that has vowed to "defend Greek national pride inside the stadiums".

Spain's economic crisis turns middle-class families into illegal squatters

"Things are getting worse and worse in Greece. There is no future for the next few years there," says Christos Christoglou, a Greek inspection engineer, who moved to Germany to find work.

In September, Jos? Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, included a stark warning in his annual 'state of the union' address, saying that the euro crisis was contributing to the rise in extremism.

And in recent months, officials in Athens have vowed to set up a special police force to combat violence against migrants and plan to impose tougher penalties for these type of crimes.

"Something must happen quick," says Judith Sunderland?from Human Rights Watch, who is author of a report called "Hate on the Streets: Xenophobic violence in Greece."??

?Xenophobic hate crimes have reached an alarming proportion in Greece," she added. "Victims are often actively discouraged from filing complaints, told by police officers that it is not worth their while or that they should fight back themselves. And many migrants fear that they could be locked up themselves because of their legal status."

'The country is on its knees': Ireland grapples with economic collapse

Meanwhile, Rahimi is still waiting for justice in the wake of his attack.?The trial has been postponed seven times already in the past year.

"And it remains unclear, whether the prosecutor will argue that the attack had been motivated by racist or xenophobic sentiment," Sunderland told NBC News.

In debt or jobless, many Italians choose suicide

One of the three accused is Themis Skordeli, a female member of Golden Dawn, who failed to get elected to parliament last May.

According to local media reports, Skordeli has been identified as a member of a so called 'anti-migrant patrol group', which was formed to 'work the streets' of poorer Athens' neighborhoods.

Rahimi, who came to Greece in 2005, says that he now rarely leaves his apartment and has become extremely cautious when going out to visit friends.

"I am afraid to live here," he says. "I will wait until the trial is over and then definitely head to another country."

Rising payroll tax to weigh on economy

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

A tax break that?s added about $19 a week to many paychecks for the last two years looks like it?s going away in January. While most taxpayers may not notice the difference, it?s a good bet the economy will.

To help offset the income lost during the surge in unemployment following the 2007, Congress and the White House gave American households a small ?tax holiday? starting in 2011 and followed it up again this year.

While unemployment remains high, consumer spending has perked up strongly in the last few months. That extra spending power could take a big hit if, as now appears likely, the Obama administration?s payroll tax holiday expires at the end of this year.

"The payroll tax holiday was intended to be temporary and there is strong bipartisan support to let that tax provision expire," said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The continued extension of a temporary payroll tax holiday has serious long-term implications for Social Security and, frankly, it's not even clear that it has helped to boost our ailing economy."

Enacted in 2010, the tax holiday was designed to help pull a stagnant economy out of the doldrums by?boosting consumer?spending, which accounts for roughly 70 percent of gross domestic product.

The money came from taxes paid to fund?Social Security, half of which is paid by employers and the other half?by workers. For 2011 and 2012, Congress and Obama cut the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.

That meant someone making the median income of about $50,000 saved $1,000 a year, or a little more than $19 a week.

Taxes go up next year, no matter who is president

The extra money diverted into consumers? pockets, though, is money that isn?t going to shore up the Social Security trust fund, which is already creaking under the actuarial weight of a large influx of aging baby boomers. With Congress already staring over the edge of a ?fiscal cliff? into a budget deficit abyss, the idea of underfunding Social Security has lost a lot of its appeal.

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security," said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, a senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. "I think more and more Americans understand that that payroll tax cut, while politically appealing, is endangering Social Security."

Technically, the tax cut hasn?t robbed money from Social Security. When the law was enacted, Congress agreed to reimburse Social Security for the lost revenue, estimated at $103 billion in 2011 and $112 billion in 2012. But Congress didn't cut spending or raise other taxes to offset the lost revenue, so the payroll tax cut is being financed with borrowed money, adding to the national debt.

That has raised concerns that borrowing from Peter to pay Paul will only make it harder to get the trust fund back on a sound footing.

Are you still having mortgage trouble with your bank?

?Further extension of the payroll tax holiday would undermine confidence in Social Security and put at risk the program?s dedicated funding stream and the hard-earned benefits of millions of Americans and their families,? AARP CEO A. Barry Rand wrote in a letter to Congress and the White House Friday.

It?s also far from clear just how much good the tax cut did to revive the economy, and whether whatever stimulus it did provide is needed. Economists are divided on how much of that was spent, how much was saved and how much used to pay down debt.

Even if it did help boost spending, the tax holiday windfall pales in comparison to the money consumers have freed by paying down the mountain of debt they accumulated during the height of the borrowing binge of the 2000s.

At the start of the decade, American households spent about 17 percent of their disposable income to cover payments on a list of financial obligations tracked by the Federal Reserve, including mortgage and consumer debt, car leases, rent, homeowners' insurance, and property taxes. After peaking at 19 percent in 2007, that burden has fallen to 15.8 percent of disposable income.

Some of that drop is the result of a wave of credit card defaults and mortgage foreclosures. Some is from households? efforts to pay down debt. But a large measure of the debt relief has come from the Fed?s unprecedented effort to drive interest rates to the floor, which has sparked multiple waves of mortgage refinancing

Altogether, the cash freed up by the falling debt burden, thanks in part to the Fed?s low-rate policies, is roughly four times as much as the money diverted from the payroll tax holiday.

The savings from low interest rates on debt payments, of course, are offset by the lost interest on savings like money market funds. But the improvement in American household finances has undercut a major argument for extending the tax cut holiday for another year.

Still, lopping some $125 billion from consumer paychecks with what amounts to a tax hike won?t help the sluggish economy recover any faster, especially if the money is cut all at once. Based on estimates of how much flows directly into spending, ending the tax holiday would represent about a $100 billion hit to consumer spending, according to JPMorgan chief U.S. economist Michael Feroli.

?Even if the adjustment is spread out over the first two quarters of the year, which seems more consistent with past experience, the headwind to growth should be noticeable,? he wrote in a recent research note.?

Opposition prolongs first-ever internal poll citing internet attacks ? RT

Police apprehend a man who tried to make a provocation during a rally on Trubnaya Square in Moscow to support opposition's coordinating council election.(RIA Novosti / Ramil Sitdikov)

The poll to elect the joint council of the Russian opposition had to be prolonged for one day due to hacker attacks on the polling website, say the organizers of the unprecedented political event.

The non-system Russian opposition is holding a poll to elect the members of what they call the Coordination Council ? a 45-member panel that can be joined by anyone who is ready to pay a relatively low registration fee of 10,000 rubles (about US$300) and hopes that his agenda will attract enough supporters from those who were ready to undergo registration and also pay a small fee to cast their vote.

After the election, the council will represent those who voted in talks with the state authorities and other political movements.

Initially it was planned that the winners of the elections would be announced on the evening of the last day of the election, Sunday. However, after the voting started the organizers encountered a massive DDoS attack on their server. As a result the voting was prolonged for one day and the winners are to be announced on Monday evening.

The person in charge of the poll ? up-and-coming politician Leonid Volkov ? said in a press interview that it was his mistake to pay little attention to internet security. Volkov also noted that he will prolong the voting for ?as long as it takes to vote for all those who want to.?

The number of those who potentially have such an intention is about 87,000 ? although the number of registered voters has exceeded 160,000, the verification procedure diminished their number by almost half.

This huge difference could possibly be explained by the fact that one of the most notorious figures in the Russian politics ? the pyramid scheme veteran Sergey Mavrodi ? has tried to hijack the elections through his new pyramid called MMM2012.

After Mavrodi called upon the members of the scheme to register as voters and candidates, the organizers of the poll understood that it threatened the whole event and decided to bar Mavrodi?s people both from running and from voting.

Finding legal justification for the move initially seemed a tough task, but soon it appeared that Mavrodi?s candidates had not provide any data about themselves in the application forms, which is against the rules. As for the voting, Leonid Volkov has said that political vote cannot be cast under pressure and Mavrodi?s calls to those who financially depend on him should be considered as such.

However, even before the vote the events took an unexpected turn as the Prosecutor General?s Office began a criminal case last week into the theft of registration fees from Mavrodi?s people.

No suspect in the case has been determined, but the formula of charges suggests that the prosecutors are after the creators of the election website. The aggrieved party is 64 citizens from Mavrodi?s supporters who sent 10,000 rubles each to register as candidates, had their candidacies rejected, yet did not get their money back.

The organizers explained that they simply could not return the money as, first of all, the rejected candidates did not provide their details and secondly the fees were received as voluntary donations and the law and bookkeeping instructions do not allow for the return of donations without a written application from the donor.

Asian shares fall after disappointing US earnings

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares fell on Monday as lacklustre earnings from leading U.S. companies and a sharp drop in Japan's exports, a key driver of the world's third-biggest economy, dented risk appetites and prompted investors to take profits on recent gains.

U.S. stocks had their worst day since late June on Friday, following disappointing results from Dow components General Electric and McDonald's , both barometers of the overall economy's health.

The MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.6 percent, led by a 0.8 percent decline in South Korean shares. Australian shares followed with a drop of 0.7 percent on worries about metals demand in China, Europe's debt woes and weak U.S. earnings. Hong Kong shares, which touched a seven-month high last week, held steady.

Analysts said the drop in U.S. equities provided a good excuse for profit-taking in Asian stock markets, many of which had rallied to multi-month highs recently on new global central bank easing and the European Central Bank's plan to buy bonds of struggling euro zone countries that ask for aid.

"Profit-taking is overshadowing buying because any forward momentum has been exhausted," Oh Tae-dong, an analyst at Taurus Securities in Seoul wrote in a note to investors. He said he expects the Korea Composite Stock Price Index to hover around current levels for the time being.

The Korea's index was still up around 10 percent from lows hit in late July. The index hit a 5-month high in September.

Australian shares scaled a 15-month high last week and the benchmark index was up nearly 6 percent since a low on September 5.

"After a rally of several weeks, buying tends to run out of steam while profit takers become more trigger happy," said CMC markets analyst Ric Spooner.

Japan's Nikkei average slipped 0.5 percent from Friday's three-week closing high.

The dollar was steady around 79.28 yen but capped at its 200-day moving average around 79.40 after reaching a two-month high of 79.47 on Thursday.

Data on Monday showed Japan's exports in September tumbled at their sharpest on-year pace since the February 2011 earthquake, while manufacturers' mood hit its lowest since early 2010.

The reports reinforced concerns that Japan may slide back into recession as sales to China and Europe sag amid the global slowdown and domestic demand, led by rebuilding from last year's disaster, loses momentum.

While global growth worries have raised concerns about weak demand from China, a Reuters poll showed that the world's second-largest economy could stage a tepid economic rebound in the fourth quarter on higher public infrastructure spending, though growth will remain lethargic through 2013.

U.S. crude erased earlier losses to inch up 0.2 percent to $90.20 a barrel and Brent also edged up 0.2 percent to $110.32.

Weaker equities weighed on Asian credit markets, pushing out the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index wider by 4 basis points.

MIXED SIGNALS IN EUROPE

The euro was resilient despite mixed signals from the euro zone over the progress of its three-year debt crisis, trading up 0.3 percent at $1.3046.

European shares snapped a four-day winning streak on Friday after disagreements among European Union leaders over how to help the region's debt-ridden banks hit financial stocks.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel raised new hurdles on Friday to using the euro zone's rescue fund to inject capital directly into ailing banks from next year, limiting the impact of a key agreement by European Union leaders on Thursday to establish a single banking supervisor from 2013.

Spain and Greece were still expected to get aid, with euro zone officials seeing a November 12 finance ministers' meeting as the next potential date for such decisions. Improving investor confidence was evident in government bond yields for highly-indebted Italy and Spain, which tumbled on Friday to multi-month lows after successful debt sales in both countries.

Some indicators were more cautious as investor focus turned to the corporate earnings seasons now under way in the United States.

The CBOE Volatility index, a gauge of expected volatility in the S&P, jumped 13.5 percent to close at 17.06 on Friday. It hit a five-month high earlier on Friday.

Spot gold recovered from a fresh six-week low of $1,713.39 an ounce hit earlier, and last traded up 0.2 percent at $1,723.09 on bargain hunting.

Hedge funds and other big speculators have cut their bullish bets on U.S. commodities to the lowest levels since the end of August, with funds mostly bailing out of gold after its repeated failure to breach the $1,800-an-ounce mark.

France 24 TV: Cairo reporter 'savagely attacked'

PARIS (AP) ? A correspondent for France 24 TV was "savagely attacked" near Cairo's Tahrir Square after being seized by a crowd, the network said Saturday. It was the latest case of violence against women at the epicenter of Egypt's restive protests.

The news channel said in a statement that Sonia Dridi was attacked around 10:30 p.m. Friday after a live broadcast on a protest at the square and was later rescued by a colleague and other witnesses. France 24 did not give further details about the attack, but it said its employees were safe and sound, though "extremely shocked," and that it will file suit against unspecified assailants.

The network, which receives state funds but has editorial independence, said it and the French Embassy were working to bring Dridi back to France.

"More frightened than hurt," wrote Dridi in French on her Twitter page Saturday. Referring in English to a colleague, she tweeted: "Thanks to (at)ashrafkhalil for protecting me in (hash)Tahrir last nite. Mob was pretty intense. thanks to him I escaped from the unleashed hands."

Ashraf Khalil, who works with France 24's English language service, said the crowd was closing in on him and Dridi while they were doing live reports on a side street off Tahrir. He said the attack and rescue took about half an hour, but it felt like a lot longer.

"The crowd surged in and then it went crazy. It was basically me keeping her in a bear hug, both arms around her and face-to-face," he told The Associated Press, estimating that at least 30 men were involved. "It was hard to tell who was helping and who was groping her."

Khalil said they retreated into a fast food restaurant with a metal door, to keep her out of the reach of the attackers. He said they hustled into a car, and some men banged on it as it sped away. Some of their belongings had been stolen, he said.

"It didn't feel organized or targeted. It felt disorganized," he said. "I felt angry. I love Tahrir. I have a lot of nostalgia for Tahrir. I am still angry. I know this is not the first time this happened; it happened to other people I know. Still, it was a shock."

Tahrir Square was the main hub of a popular uprising that toppled longtime Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak last year. Since then, it has seen numerous other protests staged by a range of groups.

At the height of the uprising against Mubarak, Lara Logan, a correspondent for U.S. network CBS, was sexually assaulted and beaten in Tahrir Square. She said later that she believed she was going to die. After being rescued, Logan returned to the United States and was treated in a hospital for four days.

The square has seen a rise in attacks against women since protesters returned this summer for new rallies, including incidents of attackers stripping women ? both fellow demonstrators and journalists ? of their clothes.

No official numbers exist for attacks on women in the square because police do not go near the area and women rarely file official reports on such incidents, but activists and protesters have reported an increase in assaults against women. And although sexual harassment is not new to Egypt, suspicions abound that many of the recent attacks are organized by opponents of various protests in a bid to drive people away.

Amnesty International said in a report in June that such attacks appeared designed to intimidate women and prevent them from fully participating in public life. The London-based human rights group has called on Egyptian authorities to investigate reports of sexual assault against women to counter the impression that no one will be punished.

Myanmar to be invited to major U.S.-Thai military exercise

BANGKOK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Myanmar will be invited to a major U.S. and Thai-led multinational military exercise, a powerful symbolic gesture toward a military with a grim human rights record and a milestone in its rapprochement with the West.

Officials from participating countries told Reuters Myanmar would be asked to send observers to the annual Kobra Gold exercise, which involves thousands of American and Thai military personnel and participants from other Asian countries.

"This appears to be the first step on the part of the U.S. to re-engage Myanmar militarily and to wean it away from its reliance on China," said Jan Zalewski, an analyst covering Myanmar for IHS Global Insight, a research firm.

Washington's rapprochement with Myanmar's military has been carefully calibrated under the umbrella of humanitarian dialogue, the sources said, constituting one of the boldest rewards for Myanmar's new semi-civilian government after 49 years of direct military rule.

It is also seen as a first step toward U.S.-Myanmar military-to-military ties, cut off after 1988 when soldiers opened fire on pro-democracy protesters in a crackdown that killed or wounded thousands and led to the house arrest of democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi.

The expected invitation follows intense lobbying by Thailand, co-host of the exercise, the sources said.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said in Washington that any Myanmar participation in Cobra Gold would focus on humanitarian relief, disaster assistance and medical programs.

"The United States is open to considering a request from the kingdom of Thailand to have a small contingent of Burmese military officers attend Cobra Gold as observers," Little said.

Pentagon officials said discussions were still underway between Thailand and the United States on the issue, and said the expected Myanmar contingent would number about three officers.

But the initiative could still prompt charges that Washington is moving too quickly in seeking to rehabilitate a military accused of continued human rights violations in ethnic regions such as Kachin State where tens of thousands of people have been displaced in 16 months of fighting.

Refugees fled forced labor, killings, rape and torture by the Myanmar military, reported Human Rights Watch in June.

"Burma's military continues to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity. It is shocking that the United States would invite them to military exercises," said Mark Farmaner, director of advocacy group Burma Campaign UK.

The invitation follows a visit this week by a delegation led by Michael Posner, the U.S. State Department's top human rights official, to Naypyitaw, the capital of Myanmar, also known as Burma. The U.S. team also included Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Vikram Singh and other U.S. military officials for discussions that U.S. officials said focused on human rights.

The talks on the Myanmar side were led by Deputy Minister for Defense Commodore Aung Thaw and other officials. Myanmar state media reported that the "two sides held talks on levels and operations of defense institutions of Myanmar and U.S. and exchanged views on future dialogue and bilateral cooperation."

"If there is a decision to move forward with military-to-military operations with Burma, then we are going to be prepared to support that the best we can," the head of U.S. Pacific Command, Navy Admiral Samuel Locklear, told journalists in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Posner, speaking to reporters on Friday, said the United States would continue to press Myanmar's military on its rights record including charges it has used brutal tactics against ethnic rebel groups and permits child soldiers.

"We had an open and direct discussion of the kinds of allegations and concerns that have been expressed over time," Posner said.

"I can't tell you coming out of the meeting that there was a specific promise to do x or y, but the tone of the discussion was straightforward and we certainly put on the table the things that we are concerned about."

The invitation is another illustration of the Obama administration's pivot this year from Iraq and Afghanistan to focus national security resources on the Asia-Pacific region.

Cobra Gold take places in Chon Buri, a Thai province east of Bangkok where the United States built up a massive military presence during the Vietnam War. It began in 1980.

Last year, about 10,000 U.S. military personnel took part, along with about 3,400 Thais. Five other countries participated ? Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea. And nine countries sent observers, including China.

"In the past, Myanmar has always been unhappy about this Cobra Gold, thinking that it was directed against them and was like a step towards invasion," said Dr Tin Maung Maung Than, a senior fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore and expert on Myanmar's military.

Even when it was a dictatorship, Myanmar sent more officers to the United States than to any other country. More than 1,200 officers trained there between Myanmar's independence from Britain in 1948 and General Ne Win's military coup in 1962, according to Maung Aung Myoe, author of "Building the Tatmadaw: Myanmar Armed Forces since 1948."

Ne Win's coup ushered in nearly half a century of isolation and misrule, but the United States maintained military ties as a bulwark against the spread of communism from neighboring China.

Some 255 Myanmar officers graduated from the United States from 1980 to 1988 under the International Military Education and Training program, more than from any other country, said Maung Aung Myoe. The program was halted, and U.S. sanctions were imposed, after the junta crushed the 1988 uprising and refused to honor the results of a general election won by Suu Kyi's party two years later.

AMERICAN REMAINS

Re-engagement began in earnest with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's historic visit to Naypyitaw in November last year. Clinton said she spoke with President Thein Sein about recovering the remains of U.S. servicemen who died in Myanmar during World War Two, noting that "the search for missing Americans once helped us repair relations with Vietnam."

During World War Two, nearly 1,000 Americans and 600 planes were lost over Myanmar due to bad weather and Japanese guns while flying from India to China. About 730 Americans remain unaccounted for, according to the U.S. Defense Department.

The Hawaii-based unit Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) ran three missions in Myanmar before its patron, former spy chief Khin Nyunt, was purged by ex-dictator Than Shwe in 2004. After Clinton's visit, the United States and Myanmar governments began talks about resuming the missions.

In August, a team of military intelligence officers from Myanmar visited JPAC to learn about remains recovery techniques and to discuss operations in Myanmar, said the U.S. Defense Department. JPAC's plans to resume missions in Myanmar remain "very tentative," its media chief Jamie Dobson told Reuters.

British efforts to re-engage with the Myanmar military have also begun. Retired general Sir Mike Jackson, one of the British Army's most prominent figures, met Myanmar's deputy commander-in-chief General Soe Win in Naypyitaw on September 21. They "frankly discussed promotion of ties" between the British and Myanmar militaries, reported the state-run Myanmar News Agency.
