14 Famous People Who Were Philosophy Majors ? 2eyeswatching

  • Umberto Eco

It makes perfect sense that one of the most prestigious living philosophers received a degree in the subject ? in 1954 from the University of Turin, actually. Humberto Eco?s focus lay largely with medieval philosophy, and he penned his bachelor?s thesis on Thomas Aquinas before eventually sloughing off religious doctrine entirely. The avant-garde scene, with which he grew intimately acquainted while working at Radiotelevisione Italiana, holds considerable influence over his provocative, mind-melting fiction and nonfiction works alike.

  • Aung San Suu Kyi

Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi hold a bachelor?s degree in philosophy and economics from Oxford, alongside a University of Delhi B.A. in politics and Ph.D. from University of London. Currently, she serves as the General Secretary of the National League for Democracy, a political party in Burma dedicated to overthrowing the military junta and installing policies for the peoples. Geopolitics followers know her as a human rights activist who finally saw freedom in 2010 after multiple house arrest sentences for promoting subversive principles and philosophies.

  • Peter Thiel

If Peter Thiel?s name doesn?t conjure up recognition, perhaps some of his technological creations and investments do. The co-founder and former CEO of Paypal also assisted in the development of Facebook, Yelp, Spotify, Yammer, LinkedIn, and plenty of other familiar and not-so-familiar online ventures. The hedge fund leader, venture capitalist, philanthropist, and all-around money-haver launched his billion-dollar career after a stint at Stanford, where he completed work on a B.A. in philosophy as well as a J.D. at the law school.

  • Ethan Coen

Along with brother Joel, Ethan Coen has produced some of modern cinema?s most beloved masterpieces, such as Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, No Country for Old Men, and plenty more. In 1979, he earned himself a philosophy degree from Princeton University, where his senior thesis dealt with language theorist (among other things) Ludwig Wittgenstein. Fans of the pair?s trademark quirky, occasionally staccato dialogue probably won?t find this at all surprising.

  • Angela Davis

As a proud feminist, Black Panther, and communist, this prominent social activist and retired University of California philosophy professor garners a veritable monsoon of controversy. Angela Davis? higher education career started at Brandeis University, where she switched her major from French to philosophy and worked under Marxist Herbert Marcuse. These studies left a gargantuan influence on her later campaigns against racism, capitalist inequalities (obviously), sexism, and anti-LGBTQ sentiment.

  • Steve Martin

California State University, Long Beach holds popular comedian, musician, writer, and general entertainer Steve Martin amongst its alumni. By then, he already managed to channel his own emotions and experiences into performing, leading one to understandably assume he probably pursued a degree path involving drama or theatre. Philosophy piqued his fascination most of all, however, particularly when it came to ideologies regarding logic and language.

  • Alex Trebek

For $400. This Jeopardy host majored in philosophy at University of Ottawa. *Ding* Who is Alex Trebek? That is correct! He completed his diploma in 1961, then launched a television career two years later as the face of Canadian game show High Rollers. Other stints on different programs followed before he finally landed his most famous and long-standing gig in 1984.

  • George Soros

?The Man Who Broke the Bank of England? started off at London School of Economics and completed his Bachelor of Science degree in philosophy in 1952. Just about the only job he could score after graduation was an entry-level slot at Singer & Friedlander, a bank. Turns out ol? George Soros possessed a knack for all things fiscal, seeing as how he kind of sort of ended up a billionaire. Launching his own hedge fund and investment firm proved quite profitable indeed, and the business mogul receives almost as much attention as his charitable efforts.

  • Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee?s real emphasis at University of Washington dredges up quite the dispute! His official records state ?drama,? but the martial arts superstar always claims philosophy ? as do many of his followers and fellow(?) majors. Regardless of how things actually went down, he did in fact study the subject quite extensively, and frequently touted its role in shaping both his acting and his athletics.

  • Phil Jackson

Legendary Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson accomplished much more than just sharpening his basketball (and track and field!) acumen while attending University of North Dakota. Players, contemporaries, administrators, and fans don?t call him ?The Zen Master? because he just loves getting his Bobby Knight on. Inquiries into ?Eastern? thought and Robert M. Pirsig?s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance won him 11 championships as a coach, added to the two earned as a player. He even published a book, Sacred Hoops, about how sport and philosophy interplay in his mind.

  • Gene Siskel

Philosophy lends itself quite well to film criticism for obvious reasons, and this famed commentator actually started off as doing just that with The Chicago Tribune. John Hersey, the Pulitzer recipient for A Bell for Adano served as Gene Siskel?s mentor during his studies while at Yale, even hooking him up with the aforementioned maiden voyage into the aforementioned career path. From there, he grew into a household name after hooking up with The Chicago Sun-Times? Roger Ebert and earning a lauded television program.

  • Susan Sontag

Filmmaker, author, activist, photographer and all around Renaissance woman Susan Sontag is frequently said to have received her B.A. from University of Chicago in philosophy, which she then followed up with graduate studies in the subject ? along with religious studies and literature ? at Harvard and Oxford. Considering her creative and intellectual oeuvre intended to shed light on social and political ills, this rigorous educational regimen served her well indeed. And by ?indeed,? we mean she earned a MacArthur Fellowship, National Book Critics Circle Award, and litany of other national and international honors.

  • David Foster Wallace

While attending Amherst as an undergraduate, renowned American postmodernist novelist and essayist double majored in philosophy and English. After graduating, he pursued a master?s in creative writing from University of Arizona, eventually earning a MacArthur Fellowship and adjunct professorship at Emerson College. Prolific in his lifetime, with an enviable bibliography of long and short works, he is most known for the metafictional masterpiece Infinite Jest.

  • Ricky Gervais

This controversy-courting comedian behind beloved TV shows Extras and The Office (the original British series) majored in philosophy at the undergraduate level while attending University College London. When asked about how it helped bolster his television career, he whipped out the old saw about monkeys and typewriters. Fans, however, can certainly see the humorous benefits of devoting time, energy, and money towards the philosophical arts if pursuing an entertainment career

How Autoresponders Work | The Article Resource Guide

    ?

At one time or another during our time on the Internet, a majority of us have received a message via an autoresponder. It may have been a short response letting you know that someone on the other end is away, or an email recognizing you for something that you have done. Perhaps it was even an email letting you know about upcoming products, or even an email letting you know that the email you previously sent didn?t get delivered.

Each one of these messages are just a different version of a useful program known as an autoresponder. Autoresponders are very useful tools, as they will automatically reply to any email that they receive. The answer that they send out however, will all depend on the messages that you have the program set up with. Autoresponders are very flexible, and most will hold a variety of pre set messages.

The very first autoresponders were used with email providers or email transfer agents. Whenever an email you sent out couldn?t be delivered to the recipient, it would send you an automatic response telling you that your mail couldn?t be delivered. Although these programs were somewhat helpful, they were not all that sophisticated.

Over the years, autoresponders have seen many changes, proving to be very useful with big companies and even Internet marketing. These days, autoresponders are used in the business world to give immediate response and feedback to prospects and customers. This could include a response about programs, information about pricing, specific details regarding a product, and even a time that someone from the company can get in touch with the client.

In today?s world of Internet marketing, staying in front of your contacts is more efficient than ever with an autoresponder. They will save you quite a bit of time, especially when you think about how long it would take you to personally send email responses to each and every email you get. When you run a business, you may get hundreds of emails a day. An autoresponder can simplify your life, by sending out a preset message response to each and every email you receive.

You can set up an autoresponder using either one or two methods ? an outsourced ASP model and server side model. When using an outsourced ASP model, the business wishing to use the autoresponder will their business model will contract through an outside provider. This outside provider will then give the company user access to a web based system, or control panel. From the control panel, the company or individual can set up the autoresponder, preset messages, and decide how the autoresponder will handle the various types of emails. To use these types of services, the individual or company will have to subscribe to the autoresponder provider a flat monthly fee.

Server side autoresponders operate differently. They are programs that a company or person installs themselves and runs it on his or her own computer or server. You can save money with these programs, as one doesn?t have to pay a provider to operate the autoresponder. Although server side autoresponders weren?t user friendly before, they have become easier and easier to operate over time, and are now the most popular type of autoresponder.

In all actuality, autoresponders are great to have. They are very reliable, and can easily save you a lot of time. How the different types work can be a bit perplexing, although most are simple to operate and easy to implement into your website. If you have an online business ? an autoresponder is something you should never find yourself without.

    It's Spring! So here's a Tip Sheet from TheMoldstore.com that can ...

Giving a home or yard a fresh look has never been easier? or less expensive. An amazing new trend in home improvement is homeowners making their own pavers, stones, and other concrete building products. And theyre made right at home using stone molds from companies like TheMoldStore.com and with bags of concrete from the local building supply store.

Port Charlotte, Florida (PRWEB) March 29, 2012

The mould concept and making things with moulds has been around for thousands of years. But until recently, there were few available moulds on the market for the serious home improvement do-it-yourselfer. Until a few years ago, one had to buy expensive, mass-produced, cookie-cutter concrete pavers or stone for most any project. And unfortunately, many times the money would run out quicker than the space where the stones or pavers were needed! That has changed. There are now mould companies that sell directly to the do-it-yourself consumer and home handyman and handy woman, like TheMoldStore.com.

When thinking of remodeling, landscaping, or home improvement projects using stone, brick or pavers, here are a few benefits of using concrete moulds to make custom-colored stone, instead of buying common stone from a retailer.

    1. Increase the Value of any Home for Pennies.

Most average-priced homes built today have a concrete walk, a macadam driveway, and maybe a poured concrete patio or wood deck outside. Folks rarely choose stone or brick designs for their homes due to the cost?despite the fact that stone lasts virtually forever and adds greatly to the worth of the home. With that said, making walkway or patio pavers, or designing and installing a custom cobblestone paver driveway using molds can greatly enhance the look and value of a home. Want to create a raised flower bed in the yard? Want to build a decorative stone wall with concrete block and cover it with stone veneer made with moulds? Landscape stone adds uniqueness to a home while providing long-lasting benefits to be enjoyed now and by future generations. And now it can be done for pennies on the dollar using concrete moulds.

    2. Create Custom Designs and Colors

Any stonework can enhance a home or yard decor; but imagine creating stone designs right at home in a choice of colors?and for pennies each! With concrete stone moulds, color can be added to the concrete mix as desired. And there are hundreds of choices and varieties of mold types, shapes, styles and sizes to choose from. This enables the producer to create truly unique stones and pavers that the neighbors will be envious of.

    3. Making Stone is Easy

Manufactured stone and pavers are easier to make at home with molds than one might think, since they come with specific instructions. No special equipment or tools are needed either. A shovel, five-gallon bucket, and an inexpensive plastic tub or wheelbarrow to mix in, is all that?s needed. If moulds are ordered from a reputable stone mold company, making professional looking stones and pavers will take little effort to accomplish. And company support will be available should it be needed. Quality moulds are durable and can be used over and over, so fewer can be purchased to get started. Yet many stones or pavers can be made with them. Its so easy- even the kids can help!

    4. Dont be Limited to Outdoor Projects

Another benefit is that the stone can be used indoors as well. Build a gorgeous rock fireplace. Create a stone floor entrance in the foyer. Add stones to a plain wall to enhance the look, feel, and richness of a room. With a little imagination and desire, anything is possible. And making stone is not limited to men. According to John Panagos, President of TheMoldStore.com, more than 60% of our customers are women. And very few of our customers have worked with molds or concrete, before making concrete products with our moulds and instructions.

    5. Save Money on Projects Calling for Manufactured Stone

Possibly the greatest benefit of all is that hundreds to thousands of dollars can be saved by making stones or pavers at home. Save as much as ninety-percent of the cost of retail outlet pavers and stone. The price of building materials goes up and down regularly. But the price of bags of concrete mix have stayed relatively inexpensive and constant. Concrete stone molds enable just about anyone to complete a stone project at a fraction of the cost of purchased stones.

Once a homeowner becomes familiar with how to make stone using moulds, friends and neighbors may want to pay to have some made for them too. What started as a project, could literally turn into a small home business without realizing it! Get started today by going online to view what can be made with ?concrete stone molds?, or visit TheMoldStore for complete information. They?ve been in the business of helping consumers for over twenty years.

Bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs dies at 88 in Tenn.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? It is impossible to overstate the importance of Earl Scruggs to American music. A pioneering banjo player who helped create modern country music, his sound is instantly recognizable and as intrinsically wrapped in the tapestry of the genre as Johnny Cash's baritone or Hank Williams' heartbreak.

Scruggs passed away Wednesday morning at 88 of natural causes. The legacy he helped build with bandleader Bill Monroe, guitarist Lester Flatt and the rest of the Blue Grass Boys was evident all around Nashville, where he died in an area hospital. His string-bending, mind-blowing way of picking helped transform a regional sound into a national passion.

Country music has transcended its regional roots, become a billion-dollar music and tourist enterprise, and evolved far beyond the classic sound Monroe and The Blue Grass Boys blasted out over the radio on The Grand Ole Opry on Dec. 8, 1945. But Scruggs had no way of knowing this as he nervously prepared for his first show with Monroe. The 21-year-old wasn't sure how his new picking style would go over.

"I'd heard The Grand Ole Opry and there was tremendous excitement for me just to be on The Grand Ole Opry," Scruggs recalled during a 2010 interview at Ryman Auditorium, where that "big bang" moment occurred. "I just didn't know if or how well I'd be accepted because there'd never been anybody to play banjo like me here. There was Stringbean and Grandpa Jones. Most of them were comedians."

There was nothing jokey about the way Scruggs attacked his "fancy five-string banjo," as Opry announcer George D. Hayes called it. In a performance broadcast to much of the country but unfortunately lost to history, he scorched the earth and instantly changed country music. With Monroe on mandolin and Flatt on guitar, the pace was electrifying and in some ways the speed and volume he laid down predicted the power of electric music.

Tut Taylor, a friend of the Scruggs family who heard that first performance on the radio in his Georgia home, called it an unbelieveably raucous moment "a lot like some of the rock 'n' roll things they had, you know. But this was a new sound. It was a pretty sound and a welcome sound."

Scruggs' use of three fingers ? in place of the limited clawhammer style once prevalent ? elevated the banjo from a part of the rhythm section ? or a even a comedian's prop ? to a lead instrument that was as versatile as the guitar and far more flashy.

His string-bending and lead runs became known worldwide as "the Scruggs picking style" and the versatility it allowed has helped popularize the banjo beyond the traditional bluegrass and country forms. Today the banjo can be found in almost any genre, largely due to the way he freed its players to experiment and find new space.

That was exactly what Ralph Stanley had in mind when he first heard Scruggs lay it down. A legendary banjo player in his own right, Stanley said in a 2011 interview that he was inspired by Scruggs when he first heard him over the radio after returning home from military service in Germany.

"I wasn't doing any playing," Stanley said. "When I got discharged I began listening to Bill and Earl was with him. I already had a banjo at that time, but of course I wanted to do the three-finger roll. I knew Earl was the best, but I didn't want to sound like him. I wanted to do that style, but I wanted to sound the way I felt and that's what I tried to do."

Country great Porter Wagoner probably summed up Scruggs' importance best of all: "I always felt like Earl was to the five-string banjo what Babe Ruth was to baseball. He is the best there ever was, and the best there ever will be."

News of Scruggs' passing quickly spread around the music world and over Twitter. Actor and banjo player Steve Martin called Scruggs, with whom he collaborated in 2001 on"Earl Scruggs and Friends," ''the most important banjo player who ever lived."

Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences said in a statement the four-time Grammy winner and lifetime achievement award recipient "leaves an indelible legacy that will be remembered for generations to come."

Flowers will be placed on his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday morning.

Scruggs earned that star when he and Flatt weaved themselves into the fabric of American culture in the 1950s and '60s.

Flatt and Scruggs teamed as a bluegrass act after leaving Monroe from the late 1940s until breaking up in 1969 in a dispute over whether their music should experiment or stick to tradition. Flatt died in 1979.

They were best known for their 1949 recording "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," played in the 1967 movie "Bonnie and Clyde," and "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" from "The Beverly Hillbillies," the popular TV series that debuted in 1962. Jerry Scoggins did the singing.

Their popularity grew, and they even became a focal point of the folk music revival on college campuses. Scruggs' wife, Louise, was their manager and was credited with cannily guiding their career as well as boosting interest in country music.

Later, as rock 'n' roll threatened country music's popularity, Flatt and Scruggs became symbols of traditional country music.

In the 1982 interview, Scruggs said "Bonnie and Clyde" and "The Beverly Hillbillies" broadened the scope of bluegrass and country music "more than anything I can put my finger on. Both were hits in so many countries."

After the breakup with Flatt, Scruggs used three of his sons in The Earl Scruggs Revue. The group played on bills with rock acts such as Steppenwolf and James Taylor. Sometimes they played festivals before 40,000 people.

Scruggs will always be remembered for his willingness to innovate, but he wasn't always accepted for it. In "The Big Book of Bluegrass," Scruggs discussed the breakup with Flatt and how his need to experiment drove a rift between them. Later in 1985, he and Flatt were inducted together in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

"It wasn't a bad feeling toward each other as much as it was that I felt I was depriving myself of something," Scruggs said. "By that, I mean that I love bluegrass music, and I still like to play it, but I do like to mix in some other music for my own personal satisfaction, because if I don't, I can get a little bogged down and a little depressed."

In 2005, "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" was selected for the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry of works of unusual merit. The following year, the 1972 Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," on which Scruggs was one of many famous guest performers, joined the list, too.

Scruggs had been fairly active in the 2000s, returning to a limited touring schedule after frail health in the 1990s. In 1996, Scruggs suffered a heart attack in the recovery room of a hospital shortly after hip-replacement surgery. He also was hospitalized late last year, but seemed in good health during a few appearances with his sons in 2010 and 2011, though he had given up the banjo for the guitar by then.

Born Jan. 6, 1924, in Flint Hill, N.C., Scruggs learned to play banjo at age 4. He appeared at age 11 on a radio talent scout show. By age 15, he was playing in bluegrass bands. In 1992, Scruggs was among 13 recipients of a National Medal of Art.

"I never in my wildest dreams thought of rewards and presentations," he said. "I appreciate those things, especially this one."

Louise Scruggs, his wife of 57 years, died in 2006. He is survived by two sons, Gary and Randy. Gary Scruggs said funeral arrangements were incomplete.

50 Cent Recruits Pauly D, Joan Rivers For Street King Campaign

MC tells MTV News why he enlisted the 'real oddball group' to promote his new energy drink.

NEW YORK50 Cent got some unusual help for his first Street King energy drink commercial. The mogul and rapper recruited "Jersey Shore" star Pauly D (who is signed to his G-Note record label) and comedy legend Joan Rivers to help spread the gospel of the newest beverage on the block.

The trio gathered at Planet Fitness in upper Manhattan to promote Street King, and MTV News was on hand as 50 and Rivers chewed scenery together. At one point, a caffeinated Rivers even used her feminine wiles to try to seduce the beefy MC. Did it work? Well, fans will have to see if he succumbs to her.

Getting Rivers and Pauly onboard was all in the rapper's master plan to get everyone interested in what he's selling. "We['re] actually shooting the first commercial for my Street King project," he dished in between takes. "It's exciting, I got Joan Rivers here. I got Pauly D, a real oddball group. We felt like it would hit different targeted audiences."

However, it's not just about selling drinks for profit. Fiddy is also using the product for a good cause. "When I developed the concept for this actual project, we thought about my experiences traveling in Africa," he explained. "And I wanted to do something 'cause of how bad famine does in Africa. So we partnered with United Nations World Food Program in order to provide a meal with every actual energy drink. So I'm excited about that."

Engineers Working On Swarm Of Laser Wielding Satellites To Deflect Asteroids

Zothecula writes with news involving space and lasers. From the article: "A collision between Earth and an asteroid a few kilometers in diameter would release as much energy as the simultaneous detonation of several million nuclear bombs, and with the impact of an asteroid estimated at around 10 km (6.2 miles) in diameter believed to be responsible for wiping out the dinosaurs, numerous strategies have been devised to try and avoid such devastation. The latest idea comes from engineers at Glasgow's University of Strathclyde who suggest that a swarm of laser-wielding satellites could nudge Earth-bound asteroids off their collision course."

(AP) ? Among the items U.S. soldiers seized from Adolf Hitler's Bavarian Alps hideaway in the closing days of World War II were albums meticulously documenting an often forgotten Nazi crime ? the massive pillaging of artwork and other cultural items as German troops marched through Europe.

Two of those albums ? one filled with photographs of works of art, the other with snapshots of furniture ? were donated Tuesday to the U.S. National Archives, which now has custody of 43 albums in a set of what historians believe could be as high as 100.

Robert M. Edsel, founder and president of the Dallas-based Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art, which announced the discovery of the two new albums at a news conference, called them "key pieces of evidence taken from a crime scene that were prized possessions of Adolf Hitler."

Relatives of the two soldiers who took the albums contacted the foundation, which has previously donated two other albums in the series to the National Archives. They had read stories in the media about foundation's mission, which includes continuing the work of the Monuments Men, who helped Allied forces protect cultural treasures during World War II and helped return stolen items after the war.

"We can only hope for more discoveries in the years to come," U.S. Archivist David S. Ferriero said at the news conference.

The Nazi agency Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg, or ERR, created the series of albums to document the items taken from across Europe. Of the 43 albums identified so far, 39 were discovered in May 1945 at Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. They were then used as evidence at the Nuremberg trials to document the Nazi looting before eventually going to the National Archives.

In 2007, the Monuments Men donated two additional albums after they were found in the attic of the family of a U.S. soldier, though the foundation has retained possession of one of those for the last few years as a teaching tool.

"I think there's a lot more of them out there," said Edsel, who noted that the albums were used as "shopping catalogs" for Hitler to select works of art for various museums.

Of the newly discovered albums, one contains photographs of 69 paintings that were taken as early as 1940. Most of those paintings appear to have been properly restituted, but an ERR database indicates four were not. The other newly found album contains photographs of 41 pieces of furniture, mostly taken from the Rothschild family.

Edsel said that by 1951, the Monuments Men had processed and returned more than 5 million stolen objects.

"It was the greatest treasure hunt in history ? one that continues to this day," Edsel said.

Greg Bradsher, senior archivist at the National Archives, said the recently discovered albums are a reminder of the massive amounts of property Hitler took and a reminder that "to this day, hundreds of thousands" of items are not with their rightful owners.

The albums are also "a reminder that a lot of soldiers in World War II brought souvenirs home ? some of them were helmets, bayonets, medals, which are really bounty of war ? but others picked up books, albums, other cultural property," Bradsher said.

One of the newly discovered albums, known as album 15, was taken by Pfc. Yerke Zane Larson, who served in the 501st Battalion of the 101st Airborne Division, the "Screaming Eagles." Cpl. Albert Lorenzetti, who served in the 989th Field Artillery Battalion, took the other album ? known as album 7 ? the same week, also from Hitler's home, called the Berghof. Both are now deceased.

"When you consider what these solders went through, slogging their way through the loss of buddies, through horrible weather conditions, fighting, combat, etc., and then this momentous occasion when they had a chance to take a deep breath, go up there to the Berghof for no reason than to be able to tell their families and future generations, 'I stood where Hitler's home was,'" Edsel said. "That's what motivated the taking of these things."

Larson's daughter, Sandra Runde of Rapid City, S.D., said that she can remember her father taking the album out once or twice when she was growing up. Runde said her father, who returned from the war to take a job sweeping the floors at a restaurant supply company before eventually buying it and working there till he was 80, didn't talk about the war and didn't elaborate on the album beyond saying that it was from Hitler's home.

"It was just tucked away somewhere," Runde said.

Runde said her father, who died on his 87th birthday in 2009, gave the album to her about five years before he died. She said she's happy that it's now somewhere safe where people can appreciate it.

FTC seeks laws to reveal what data brokers hold

(AP) ? The Federal Trade Commission is calling for legislation that would give citizens access to the information that commercial data brokers store about them.

The proposal is an unusually tough one from an agency that prefers to coax companies into adopting voluntary principles. A month ago, Obama administration officials outlined a proposed "Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights" and urged technology companies, consumer groups and others to jointly craft new protections.

In a privacy report released this week, the FTC is urging the adoption of a law that would let consumers access and dispute personal data held by information brokers, similar to the way consumers today have free access to their credit reports.

The report comes as the business of background checks is booming. An investigation by The Associated Press last year found that data brokers often store incorrect or outdated information, including criminal records. That meant some people were denied jobs because data brokers incorrectly reported them as convicted felons.

The commission called on data brokers to create a centralized website where they identify themselves and disclose how they collect and use consumer data.

"Consumers are often unaware of the existence of these entities, as well as the purposes for which they collect and use data," Monday's report said.

The FTC recommended basing legislation on a bill that was passed by the House in 2009, but died in the Senate.

Financial markets today offer enormous growth potential. But managing your own investments can be an extremely challenging task. Anticipating market trends, assessing the impact of socio-economic changes on your investments, keeping abreast of latest corporate developments and financial analysis all adds up. Managing one?s investments can become nearly a full-time affair that requires considerable time and expertise.

During your journey of life, you need to make numerous plans and take important decisions. Some of these decisions have strong financial implications and can alter the course of your life and when it comes to investing your hard earned money, you need to partner with someone you trust, one who will make your money work hard.

The idea of Portfolio management is to overcome the pace of change in business landscape and provide investment avenues to stay ahead of the risk return curve and generate positive returns consistently over a period of time.

(AP) ? A discarded chunk of a Russian rocket is forcing six space station astronauts to seek shelter in escape capsules early Saturday.

NASA spokesman Rob Navias (NAVE-e-us) says the space junk will barely be close enough to be a threat. But if it hits the station it could be dangerous, so the astronauts ? two Americans, three Russians and a Dutchman ? will wake early and climb into two Soyuz vehicles ready to rocket back to Earth just in case.

The debris is supposed to come closest at 2:38 a.m. EDT. It was not noticed until Friday, too late to move the International Space Station out of the way.

This is the third time in 12 years that astronauts have had to seek shelter from space junk.
