How To Start An Internet Radio Station The Basics

More and more people are tuning in online for their entertainment needs than ever before in the past. In fact it is predicted that Internet TV and Radio will surpass traditional satellite and radio in the future. That being said many companies are now setting up new channel online to capture their share of the market. So now you may ask yourself how can I get in on it?

Well lets begin with the basics. A typical website has a front end and a back end. The front end is what your customer sees when they visit your website or URL. This is your "store front" if you will. This is where your customer/listeners can browse your site. The back end would be compared to the back of a retail store where you keep the things necessary to manage your store. A website is the same thing. It has a front end for your customer or listeners to tune in, and it has a back end to where you can manage the content of your website including display ads, news, blogs, and more. The back end is sometimes referred to as a "admin panel" or a "CMS" (Content management system).

So now that you understand the basics of a website lets discuss what makes a site a Internet radio station. Well the first obvious answer is the fact that it would have a player for your listeners to tune into. Other factors on the front side of your page may be if you have "audio on demand" or "archived" audio from past shows or programs. However what make a Internet radio station work is the back end or the CMS. This is where you would upload your audio files too and arrange them into a play list. This is also where you could store your archived shows and place them where you want them on your web page through your CMS. Through your CMS you could decide to broadcast live or just have a streaming channel of pre recorded audio. When I refer to streaming I am referring to your prerecorded audio that you arrange into a play list that streams to your website. When the play list reaches the end it loops to play the list over again. Through the CMS it will allow you to add, or delete existing content to keep your play list up to date.

For live broadcasts you would have to decide if you would like the existing streaming feed to stop and then insert your live feed or if you want a separate page and audio player to play your live feed. If you had a separate page for your live broadcasts you could always have a notification on your home page when you are broadcasting live. Something like "We are now broadcasting live click here to listen". This way you can keep your streaming player with your prerecorded audio going without interruption while at the same time broadcasting live to a different page.

Your CMS or admin panel will be your most important piece of your Internet radio station. If you are thinking of starting an Internet radio station then I would suggest using a professional. Companies like B&C Enterprise specialize in Internet radio and give you a turn key site ready for broadcasting.

In conclusion there is plenty of room on the net for great ideas in the Internet radio world. So go for it and get your channel going!
