CoreAlign From the Perspective of an Expert Physical Therapist ...

By?Angela Listug-Vap, DPT, FAAOMPT

The big picture to me is INJURY PREVENTION. The key to injury prevention is training the body to withstand the repetitive stress of running. In order to do this several areas must be addressed:

  1. Good STRENGTH in both your power muscles and stabilizers. It is frequently weak stabilizing muscles in the trunk, hip and lower leg that lead to the most common running injuries including ITB syndrome, Patellar Tendinitis, and Plantar Fasciitis.
  2. Maintaining good FLEXIBILITY and MOBILITY in your power muscles and lower extremity joints. With most running injuries tightness/stiffness in hamstrings, hip flexors, quadriceps, calves and/or ankle joints are playing a leading role.
  3. Solid BALANCE REACTIONS are important so as you move from one leg to the other you?ll be able to react to all the changes in ground forces without a second thought. The best way to improve balance reactions is to practice.
  4. Training your body to put all the above foundations together and use efficient MOVEMENT STRATEGIES to get the job done well.

CoreAlign is an exercise method that addresses all of the above in a functional position (standing) with the ability to use reciprocal gait patterns (moving legs in the same way we walk and run).? It gives variety to the body so you won?t get bored. A CoreAlign class or session is a huge time saver for the runner trying to ?get it all in?. Ideally one hour, twice a week and your body will reap all the benefits that a successful runner needs.? From a PT perspective it is a training and rehab gem.

Try CoreAlign for yourself! The Core Studio offers free scheduled 15 minute demos, or sign up for a free ?Feel It First? hour-long class ?on the first Monday of each month. ?Find out more information by viewing our Core Studio website by clicking here, or?call 406-541-2606 to reserve your spot.

(AP) ? A New Jersey woman widely known as "the tanning mom" is celebrating a grand jury's refusal to indict her on a charge she unlawfully let her 5-year-old daughter into a tanning booth.

Patricia Krentcil addressed reporters outside her Nutley home Tuesday night by yelling: "cha-ching!" Prosecutors announced earlier in the day she no longer faced a child endangerment charge.

She says her life has been "a living hell" and she plans to move to London for a year to decompress while her husband and kids stay in New Jersey.

Krentcil became a tabloid sensation because of her own deep tan and professed love of tanning. She says "tanning is not a crime" and she'll keep at it.

Asked what she learned from the whole episode, she replied, "People suck."

WATCH: Baseball Brawl Breaks Out During College Game

Three players were ejected from UC Riverside's game at Sacramento State on Friday after a bench-clearing brawl broke out in the third inning.

After a line drive was hit right at the Sacramento State shortstop, UC Riverside's Eddie Young got caught in a rundown between second and third base. Sacramento State's Andrew Ayers was there to make the tag on Young, but then he took it a step further and shoved him too. Young immediately retaliated and threw a punch, causing both benches to clear as a fight ensued in the middle of the field.

?I was just shocked,? said Dave Soto, a father of one of the Sacramento State players said, via KCRA.com.

Young, Ayers and UC Riverside catcher Drake Zarate were all ejected, per NBC Southern California.

As the Sacramento Bee noted, players who get ejected are suspended for four games under NCAA rules.

S. Africa police: Pistorius detective faces charges

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? The lead investigator in the murder case against Oscar Pistorius faces attempted murder charges himself over a 2011 shooting, police said Thursday.

The prosecution said they were unaware of the charges against the detective when they put him on the stand in court to explain why Pistorius should not be given bail.

Police Brig. Neville Malila told The Associated Press that detective Hilton Botha ? who gave testimony in the Pistorius bail hearing on Wednesday ? is scheduled to appear in court in May on seven counts of attempted murder. The charges relate to an incident in October 2011, when Botha and two other police officers fired shots at a minibus, Malila said.

Malila said police learned Wednesday, the same day that Botha appeared in court to oppose Pistorius' bail application, that the charges against Botha and the two others had been reinstated by the Director of Public Prosecutions. They were initially dropped following the shooting incident.

Malila said police were waiting for details from the Botha case file from the prosecutor.

Medupe Simasiku, the spokesman for the prosecutors charging Pistorius with premeditated murder, said he couldn't say how the charges against Botha would affect their case against Pistorius.

It was clear they could undermine it, however.

"The (Pistorius) prosecutors were not aware of those charges (against Botha)," Simasiku, of the National Prosecution Agency, said. "We are calling up the information so we can get the details of the case. From there we can take action and see if we remove him from the investigation or if he stays."

On Wednesday, the prosecution case against Pistorius began to unravel with revelations of a series of police blunders and Botha's admission that authorities have no evidence challenging the double-amputee Olympic athlete's claim he killed his girlfriend accidentally.

Pistorius faces a charge of premeditated murder, but says he shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp accidentally with a licensed firearm after thinking she was a dangerous intruder in his house.

In his often confused testimony, Botha, who was described as a 24-year police veteran with 16 years as a detective, conceded that police had left a 9 mm slug from the barrage that killed Steenkamp inside a toilet at the scene. Police also lost track of illegal ammunition found inside the house, Botha said, and the detective himself walked through the crime scene without wearing protective shoe covers, potentially contaminating the area.

He also claimed in court that police found boxes of testosterone and needles in multiple Paralympic champion Pistorius' bedroom following the Valentine's Day shooting last week, but then said later he wasn't sure what the exact name of the substance was.

The prosecution conceded laboratory tests on the substance weren't yet completed and so it was unclear what it was.

Pistorius' defense lawyer Barry Roux asserted that authorities were taking "every piece of evidence to try to extract the most possibly negative connotation and present it to the court."

The case, which is still only in a bail hearing, has riveted much of the world with its dramatic developments as Pistorius, the man known as the Blade Runner for his famous carbon-fiber running prostheses, says he shot and killed model Steenkamp by mistake.

Pistorius fired four shots through the locked door of a toilet enclosed inside his bathroom because he thought there was an intruder in there, he says.

Prosecutors say he intended to kill the 29-year-old Steenkamp after a fight in the early hours of the morning.

Chevron, Transocean say Brazil drops criminal oil spill charges

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A Brazilian judge dropped criminal charges against Chevron Corp , Transocean Ltd and 17 of their employees related to a November 2011 offshore oil spill, the companies said on Wednesday.

The criminal case, and a civil suit seeking as much as 40 billion reais ($20.4 billion) in damages, have cast a chill over Brazil's oil industry. The criminal suit carried penalties of up to 31 years. The civil case still open is Brazil's largest-ever environmental lawsuit.

Brazilian oil output fell in 2012, and shutting Chevron operations in the South American country contributed to the decline. Investor interest was already waning in the face of regulatory changes and a bitter dispute over royalties that have blocked the sale of new exploration licenses for four years.

"Chevron has been tied up for more than a year over a spill that caused no real damage," said Adriano Pires, head of the Brazil Infrastructure Institute, a Rio de Janeiro energy think-tank. "It's impossible to understand how a country that wants to attract investment would have taken so long to dismiss the case against Chevron."

Failure to dismiss this case, or resolve the civil suit, will make it hard to attract investment for three oil and gas rights auctions planned for later this year, he added.

The press offices of Chevron and Transocean confirmed a Reuters report of the dismissal of criminal charges based on three sources with direct knowledge of the case.

"We welcome this news that the Court recognized, with respect to the Frade event of November 2011, that Transocean's crews did exactly what they were trained to do, acting responsibly, appropriately and quickly while always maintaining safety as their top priority," Guy Cantwell, a Transocean spokesman in Houston, said in an e-mailed statement.

The criminal charges were filed last March by Eduardo Santos de Oliveira, the same Brazilian prosecutor who filed the civil lawsuit.

The 3,600 barrel spill in the Frade Field northeast of Rio de Janeiro was quickly stopped, cleaned up and caused no discernable environmental damage, Brazil's oil regulator, the ANP, said in a report last year.

The spill was less than 1/1000th of the size of BP Plc's Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010. The Frade spill never came close to shore. No workers were injured in the Frade spill. In the Deepwater Horizon disaster 11 died.

Chevron said in a statement that it "is pleased by the court's decision. Chevron Brasil remains committed to its policy of full transparency and close cooperation with the Brazilian authorities."

Prosecutors can still appeal the ruling dismissing the charges, made by Judge Marcelo Luzio of the 10th Criminal Unit of the Rio de Janeiro Federal Court, one of the sources told Reuters.

The sources asked not to be named because their employers do not allow them to speak about the case.

The Frade field is 52 percent owned by California-based Chevron, 30 percent by Brazil's state-led Petroleo Brasileiro SA and 18 percent by Frade Jap?o, a group owned by Japanese trading companies Inpex Corp and Sojitz Corp .

Petrobras, as the Brazilian company is known, Sojitz and Inpex were never charged in relation to the spill.

Chevron shares fell 0.82 percent in New York trading late Wednesday afternoon while Transocean shares dropped 2.9 percent.

Maker?s Row Grows As A Matchmaker Between Fashion Designers & Domestic Manufacturers

Maker's RowBarriers to international manufacturing and high fuel costs have long made overseas production painful for small businesses. Now, an economic trend towards American manufacturing has created a timely entrance to the market for Maker’s Row. The startup, a finalist in last week’s Women 2.0 Pitch Competition,?says it wants to become a go-to resource to create, well, anything. Co-founders Matthew Burnett and Tanya Menendez launched Maker’s Row in November to act as a sort of?Match.com?with?Kiva.org-like profiles for factories and facilities. The site enables recognized designers and amateurs alike to partner with manufactures that are searchable on the site by state to create a range of items, from handbags to sportswear.?It charges manufacturers a subscription fee to post. By commissioning their work to be made stateside, brands can then more closely guide processes and prevent their orders from being stuck in transit abroad or in customs, Burnett says. Facilities are using the platform to communicate with one another and find materials, interactions that have surprised even the co-founders. Maker’s Row sees a sweet spot in getting orders placed by small to mid-size businesses — “people who are serious about making things” — and has raised $75K to date. It is looking to raise $1.25 million to hire backend developers and create more tools to track connections. Burnett said that cultural and language barriers complicated his work with overseas manufacturers when he was a watch designer for the likes of Marc Jacobs and Izod.?”I felt like I was taking a gamble every time I worked with a new manufacturer,” said Burnett. He then started his own collection of domestically made accessories, The Brooklyn Bakery. That is when he met Menendez, who started working on the brand with him when she wasn’t at her day job at Goldman Sachs working on automation projects. The combination of Menendez’s experience with trying to replace legacy processes and the difficulty the duo faced when searching for strong production partners led to the idea for Maker’s Row. Scott Weiner helped launch the company as tech lead, and the concept for making sourcing more accessible led its three co-founders to the Brooklyn Beta summer incubator program to build the first version of their product. Alibaba does similar work in China, but connecting designers with domestic sources seems to be a space that Maker’s Row owns. The DUMBO-based company has visually broken out the steps involved in physical goods production,

Teardowns.com 'A Disruptor' in Real Estate Industry, Owner Says ...

Brian Hickey pointed to an old black-and-white photograph of downtown Chicago above his desk in Clarendon Hills.

?You take a look at that skyline, it doesn?t look like it looks now,? Hickey said, referring to buildings in the picture that no longer stand. ?They were replaced by something.?

Though controversial in towns like Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills, redevelopment is natural and the product of a ?constantly evolving? market, the longtime Hinsdale resident and founder of Teardowns.com says. Hickey?s bluntly named business aims to serve that market by connecting sellers who own property with redevelopment potential with interested buyers.

?It?s not balloons and open houses,? Hickey said of his company?s real estate niche. ?This is a business transaction for a property type that deserves a marketplace that?s unique to itself.?

Teardowns.com was behind the recent sale of the 206 N. Washington St. property, which got public attention this month when several members of the Village of Hinsdale Board of Trustees voiced disappointment that the house on the property, built in 1890 by a Civil War veteran, was slated for demolition.

READ:?Teardowns.com Owner Defends Sale of 122-year-old Hinsdale House?

Hickey said the house had been on the traditional market for two-and-a-half years with two different agents and had received no offers. A hidden-in-the-back chef?s kitchen and a master bedroom without a bathroom or a closet are among the hard-to-sell interior features of the home, Hickey said.

After the seller, a friend of Hickey?s, decided to list the home on Teardowns.com, the property sold in four days to a Hinsdale buyer interested in redeveloping it.

?The buyer?s happy. The seller?s happy,? Hickey said. ?Really those are usually the two most important components.?

Hickey, a former hedge fund manager, started Teardowns.com in 2001 after selling his Hinsdale home at the corner of Hickory and Adams. He said he couldn?t find the right price when he went directly to builders, but sold it quickly to one after hiring a realtor.

?I kind of shook my head as a market guy and said, ?Gosh this seems like a terribly inefficient transaction,? Hickey said.

Directly connecting sellers of possible teardowns with interested buyers, Teardowns.com took off during last decade?s housing boom as a national brokerage, opening offices outside the Chicago area in places like Greenwich, CT, Orange County, CA, San Francisco and Dallas.

?Then the market changed,? Hickey said, referring to the 2008 housing collapse. ?We were caught with the wrong business model.?

Today, while Teardowns.com has a small number of licensees and will act as a realtor if a customer so desires, it mostly relies on its web-based system to make its connections. Sellers pay to post their homes on the site, as do, to Hickey?s surprise, a number of realtors.

Hickey calls his business a ?disruptor? in a real estate industry that he thinks prefers ?status quo and complacency? while doing its best to play down redevelopment transactions on sites like Zillow and Realtor.com.?

?We should have 3,000 licensees and we don?t,? he said. ?There?s got to be a pushback.?

Hickey, a father of four whose youngest is a senior at Hinsdale Central, said he?s lived in both new homes and old homes and ?both have their own charms.?

?It depends on where you are in your life,? he said.

And while Hickey says Teardowns.com is "not riding the tractor" and he himself is not anti-old-homes, he admits that his straightforward and eye-catching brand name has been an asset to the business.?

"We just need the brand out there and the marketplace really takes care of itself."

There are plenty of ways to keep up on Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills?news:

Law would protect thousands of firearms

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress' latest crack at a new assault weapons ban would protect more than 2,200 specific firearms, including a semi-automatic rifle that is nearly identical to one of the guns used in the bloodiest shootout in FBI history.

One model of that firearm, the Ruger .223 caliber Mini-14, is on the proposed list to be banned, while a different model of the same gun is on a list of exempted firearms in legislation the Senate is considering. The gun that would be protected from the ban has fixed physical features and can't be folded to be more compact. Yet the two firearms are equally deadly.

"What a joke," said former FBI agent John Hanlon, who survived the 1986 shootout in Miami. He was shot in the head, hand, groin and hip with a Ruger Mini-14 that had a folding stock. Two FBI agents died and five others were wounded.

Hanlon recalled lying on the street as brass bullet casings showered on him. He thought the shooter had an automatic weapon.

Both models of the Ruger Mini-14 specified in the proposed bill can take detachable magazines that hold dozens of rounds of ammunition. "I can't imagine what the difference is," Hanlon said.

President Barack Obama has called for restoring a ban on military-style assault weapons and limiting the size of ammunition magazines.

A bill introduced last month by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. would ban 157 specific firearms designed for military and law enforcement use and exempt others made for hunting purposes. It also would ban ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

Yet there are firearms that would be protected under Feinstein's proposal that can take large capacity magazines like the ones used in mass shootings that enable a gunman to fire dozens of rounds of ammunition without reloading.

Feinstein said in a written response to questions from The Associated Press that the list of more than 2,200 exempted firearms was designed to "make crystal clear" that the bill would not affect hunting and sporting weapons.

The December shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., that left 26 students and educators dead forced Washington to focus on curbing gun violence, a risky political move not tried in decades.

The gun industry, which is fighting any sort of ban, says gun ownership in the U.S. is the highest it's ever been, with more than 100 million firearms owners.

Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden have traveled around the country in an effort to gain support for new laws. Feinstein's proposal is the only sweeping piece of legislation designed to ban assault weapons currently being considered.

But some gun experts say the lists of banned and exempted firearms show a lack of understanding and expertise of guns.

"There's no logic to it," said Greg Danas, president of a Massachusetts-based expert witness business and firearms ballistic laboratory. "What kind of effect is it going to have?"

Feinstein's bill defines an assault weapon as a semi-automatic firearm with a detachable magazine that has one of several military characteristics that are specified in her legislation. Examples of those characteristics include a pistol grip, which makes a firearm easier to hold, and a forward grip, which makes the firearm easier to stabilize to improve accuracy. The definition is similar to the one in Congress' original ban on assault weapons, which went into effect in 1994 and was widely criticized for outlawing firearms based on cosmetic features.

Feinstein was behind the 1994 law which, at the time, protected more than 600 firearms. The current bill would exempt by name and model more than 2,200 firearms by name and model.

Feinstein said her staff had worked for more than a year to draft updates for the ban that expired in 2004, and it was apparent in the wake of recent mass shootings that now was the time to introduce a new bill. She said her staff consulted with law enforcement agencies and policy experts for months to create the expanded list.

Naming firearms that would remain legal under an assault weapons ban is a politically motivated gesture that was used to help pass the original ban in the early 1990s, people familiar with the process said.

Any firearm that does not fall within the law's definition of an assault weapon would not be banned. As a result, the list gives vulnerable politicians cover from constituents who do not want to give up their firearms.

For example, a politician can look at the list and assure a constituent that the government would not ban the firearm he or she loves to use for deer hunting. Under the 1994 law and the currently proposed one, the government would not have the authority to take away guns people already legally own. The ban would only apply to specific firearms manufactured and sold after the law is enacted.

A list of exempted firearms was not part of Feinstein's original assault weapons ban two decades ago, said Michael Lenett, one of the lead congressional staffers on gun control issues in 1994. A separate bill in circulation exempted far fewer hunting and sporting firearms, Lenett said.

The purpose of creating such a list was to assure people that the government was not going after any legitimate hunting or sporting weapons. "The other purpose of the list was to have a high profile way of assuring certain folks ? including legislators ? that we would not be going after their weapons that they use for those legitimate purposes," Lenett said.

"It was a win-win situation," Lenett recalled, because, he said, if the list could help pick up votes needed to pass the bill and temper some of the opposition, it could assuage some opponents of the ban without making the law less effective.

But gun experts say the lists in 1994 and the expanded lists of today don't make much sense.

"The bill demonstrates a shocking ignorance of the product they are purporting to regulate," said Lawrence Keane, senior vice president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a trade association based in Newtown, Conn., that represents gun manufacturers. "I have no idea how they arrived at this list. It would seem to be random, bordering on throwing darts at a dart board."

For instance, Feinstein's current proposal includes exemptions for three specific types of the M-1 Carbine, an assault rifle designed for the military that the U.S. currently bans from being imported. A draft of the legislation, created and modified in November and early December last year, banned the M-1 Carbine and didn't exempt any models, according to a copy obtained by the AP.

Feinstein said there was disagreement among firearms experts, law enforcement and gun safety organizations about whether to include the M-1 Carbine on the list of banned weapons.

"It has been used in multiple police shootings, and was originally used by U.S. soldiers on the battlefield," Feinstein said. "On the other hand, it comes in models that would not meet the military characteristics test." She said she decided to limit banned weapons to those that met the definition outlined in the bill.

At a Jan. 30 hearing by the Senate Judiciary Committee on gun violence, National Rifle Association President Wayne LaPierre said Feinstein's bill is "based on falsehoods to people that do not understand firearms, to convince them that the performance characteristics of guns that they are trying to ban through that bill are different than the performance characteristics that they're not trying to ban."

The Ruger Mini-14 is a perfect example.

The model that has a fixed stock would be exempted by Feinstein's ban; the weapon was protected in the 1994 law as well. A Ruger Mini-14 with a collapsible and folding stock would be illegal.

The guns fire the same caliber bullet and can take detachable magazines that could hold dozens of rounds of ammunition. The folding stock only reduces the gun's length by 2.75 inches, according to the manufacturer's website.

"It's irrelevant," Edmund Mireles, an FBI agent who survived the Miami shootout, said of the differences in features. "They're equally dangerous."

Mark D. Jones, a senior law enforcement adviser for the University of Chicago Crime Lab, said the folding stock does not affect the firearm's lethal potential.

"Given that both firearms will accept a 30 round or larger magazine, it renders the differences between them entirely cosmetic," Jones said.

Kristen Rand, the legislative director at the Washington-based Violence Policy Center, said the Ruger Mini-14 model that would be banned under Feinstein's legislation is easier to hold while firing because it has a pistol grip, and it's easier to hide because it has a collapsible stock. That's what makes it more dangerous that the Ruger Mini-14 with the fixed stock which would be exempted under the Feinstein bill, she said.

"And that's supposed to save somebody's life?" asked Hanlon, the FBI agent shot alongside Mireles.

Hanlon considered the differences between the two models and whether the events of April 11, 1986, would have been different if the shooter used a Ruger Mini-14 with a fixed stock. "I don't think it would have changed a damn thing," he said. "I don't see what makes that gun less dangerous."

Muscle Building Tips For Health And Fitness!

Great advice is an invaluable tool for anyone looking to build muscle and get into great shape. Keep in mind there is much information to learn about building muscles, and that you want to learn as much as you can about the subject. So, be sure to absorb all of the information that you?re going to learn in this article so you can apply it properly.

Balance is essential if you want to build muscle. With no work you can look forward to no strength and small muscles, but you need to make sure not to go overboard either. Working out too much can lead to stretched out skin or permanent marks.

TIP! Do not cut out all fat in your diet as this is a building block for healthy joints. The healthy types of fats are great for joint lubrication, and are also able to increase testosterone levels.

Stick to your cardio exercise. While your cardiovascular routine won?t increase muscle mass, it will better prepare your heart for your more strenuous weightlifting routine. Three 20-minute cardio sessions per week will help you maintain your heart without the risk of impairing your muscle growth.

Include an effective number of repetitions in your training session sets. Make sure each rep includes 15 lifts or more, and always have a break between reps. The lactic acid in your muscles will continue to flow and as a result, muscle growth will be stimulated. You can grow your muscles tremendously by following this advice.

Building your muscles can provide many health benefits, and you do not have to get really bulky. You can boost your self-esteem, strengthen your joints, and improve your lung capacity when you combine muscle-building exercises with light- to moderate-intensity cardio workouts.

TIP! During muscle-building exercises, train to failure on the last set. If you?re not getting to that point, you will most likely not trigger the processes that encourage muscle growth.

Your training routine should be determined by your goals. Sticking with the same routine can help you make more rapid progress toward your goals. Once you have developed a core of regular exercises, you can add and rotate some others to keep from getting too bored.

Eating enough protein is a great way to build muscle. A good way to consume protein is through shakes and supplements. They are especially beneficial after a workout and also right before going to bed. In order to drop pounds while also building muscle, try to drink one of these on a daily basis. If your goal is to also increase your mass, consuming as many as three per day will be beneficial.

Make sure you eat foods that are high in protein before doing your workout. Prior to starting a workout, consume a minimum of 20 grams of whey protein. This will help your muscles recover quickly, decreasing the likelihood that your muscles will be broken down for energy.

TIP! Consider taking a creatine supplement. It can help with the muscle-building process, as it may allow you to push yourself a little harder.

Always remember to eat prior to and after working out. At the beginning, look to a high protein snack. Once you are further into the muscle-building process, however, you may wish to put more effort into measuring and planning your overall protein intake, including the snacks or shakes you consume before and after workouts.

Research muscle exercises to ensure you are engaging in the most effective exercises. Different exercises work on different parts of the body, and can either build muscle mass or tone your muscles. Don?t forget to use a variety of different methods so that each muscle group is worked.

After you workout a specific muscle group, you then want to make sure you stretch those muscles out. This will prevent soreness, and will allow your muscles to recover more quickly. Although these stretches may be difficult to do, it will end up making a big difference in developing your muscles.

TIP! Buying a gym membership is a good way to begin weight training if you have no prior experience. Gyms have all the equipment you need, and gym professionals can give you advice on building muscles.

Include the ?big three? into your routine every time. The ?big three? muscle development exercises are: bench presses, dead lifts and squats. These particular exercises not only increase your bulk, but they also ensure your body is well conditioned and help improve your overall strength as well. Try to include some variation of these exercises in workouts on a regular basis.

Take the ideas you?ve just read and incorporate them into your exercise routine. Keep it up and you will soon have the body of your dreams! While results aren?t immediate, the great feeling you have from working hard to better yourself will be, so revel in it!

FDA Grants Priority Review of Bayer's Radium Ra 223 Dichloride for Prostate Cancer

Bayer AG's (BAYRY, BAYN.XE) new-drug application for its oncology compound, Radium Ra 223 Dichloride, was granted priority review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The compound is under review for the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer in patients with bone metastases.

The FDA grants priority review to medicines that provide a treatment where little or no adequate therapy exists and aims to complete its review within six months of the 60-day filing receipt rather than the standard 12-month review.

"Receiving this designation marks another positive milestone for radium-223 and underscores Bayer's ongoing commitment in oncology," said Pamela A. Cyrus, vice president and head of U.S. medical affairs for Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals.

American depository shares were recently up 0.51% at $95.64. The stock has climbed 31% over the past year.

Asian Gaming Giant Nexon Sees Revenues Climb 39% To $331.4M

nexon-logoNexon, the freemium gaming company that went public around the time that Zynga did, saw its fourth-quarter revenues jump 39 percent to 30.9 billion Japanese yen ($331.4 million). It still posted a net loss of 94 million yen ($1 million) because of writedowns in various investments and higher tax expenses in South Korea. Founded in Seoul almost 20 years ago, Nexon built a strong business in downloadable PC games in China and South Korea with franchises like MapleStory, which have done more than $1 billion in cumulative revenue. The company later moved its headquarters to Tokyo, and?raised $1.2 billion in a late 2011 IPO. While the company’s stock hasn’t done as badly as Zynga’s over the past year, it hasn’t been easy either. Nexon’s shares trade 29 percent lower than they did a year ago, as gaming stocks like GREE and others globally have struggled. The business’ operating margins declined slightly into this last quarter because the company’s growing line of mobile games have lower profit margins than Nexon’s downloadable game business in China. The company’s shares declined 3.4 percent today to 857 Japanese yen ($9.20). Nexon expects that its PC business will be roughly flat this quarter at between $305.9 million and $324.4 million in revenue. But mobile games will have grown by more than thirty-fold year-over-year at between $79.4 million and $87.4 million in revenue. That’s off the back of two key mobile acquisitions over the past year, including the $468.4 million deal to buy top Japanese game developer gloops. gloops is one of the top developers on DeNA’s Mobage platform. Both DeNA and Nexon recently affirmed a gaming partnership that would bring about 10 different Nexon and gloops-produced games to the Mobage platform this year. Nexon also bought another studio called InBlue in mid-2012, but terms weren’t disclosed.

Atlanta recruiting 5,000 volunteers for cancer study

ATLANTA --?Sixty?years ago, 1 million men and women signed up for the first-ever Cancer Prevention Study. They filled out surveys every few years. And the information from those million Americans led to a dramatic discovery.

Doctor Alpa Patel with the American Cancer Society is the lead researcher on CPS3, the third generation of the cancer prevention studies.

MORE | Join the Cancer prevention Study 3

"The first study was actually set up to specifically address the question of whether not smoking caused lung cancer, and it provided the first evidence that in fact smoking is what was the causal fact, causal factor with the increase rise in lung cancer death rates we were seeing in men at that time," she said.

It's something we take for granted -- if you smoke, you can get lung cancer. But that discovery was just one of 500 scientific publications to come out of the first and second generation cancer prevention studies.

Today, there's a 20% decline in the cancer mortality rate. Treatment is better. Early screenings save more lives.

But there remains much more we need to know, because cancer is still threatening and claiming the lives of the people we love most.

So, one initial blood sample, a survey every two years, and a commitment to keep at it. What's it worth? Everything.

In the two and a half years since?11Alive?did?a story at the AFLAC cancer center,?two of the children we profiled, 6-year-old Joshua Johnson and teenager Laura Stewart, died.

Your commitment can help us tell more stories of survival. Collectively, we have within us the answer to understanding and one day curing cancer.

(AP) ? A suspect was on the run Tuesday after three people were shot to death and one was wounded at a known drug house in suburban Salt Lake City, causing temporary lockdowns at several area schools.

Police left three bodies inside the house for much of Tuesday as they searched Midvale for ex-convict David Fresques, 25, who left his car at a nearby Motel 6.

"He is a suspect at large, and we want to get him caught," Unified Police Department Lt. Justin Hoyal said Tuesday afternoon.

Fresques has a lengthy criminal record and was paroled in November on a robbery conviction, court records show. His involvement or motive in the shooting was unknown.

Detectives, meanwhile, were interviewing two adults and a child left unharmed at the house during the shooting, Hoyal said.

The shooting was reported around 8 a.m. at a house that backs up to a sound barrier for Interstate-15, about a dozen miles south of Salt Lake City.

Hoyal said a search warrant had been served at the residence in recent weeks for drug activity. "It was a known narcotics house," he said.

Several elementary schools were locked down to keep children safe as dozens of officers began a search for Fresques, who police believe left the home after the shooting. The school lockdowns were later lifted, but police kept the schools under guard for much of the day.

At first, police called Fresques a "person of interest" in the case. But by late Tuesday Hoyal left no doubt that he was being considered a suspect, together with a second man who has yet to be identified.

Investigators and a medical examiner were preparing to enter the house late Tuesday to recover the bodies and evidence.

The fourth shooting victim, a woman, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Her condition improved later Tuesday to serious, Hoyal said.

Neighbors said they thought the house had been left vacant after police conducted the drug raid weeks ago.

"We heard a big boom at 4 o'clock in the morning," said Guy Foote, 50, who lives nearby. "They blew the door hinges off with flash grenades. The police were telling us to get back inside our houses."

He and other residents were shocked to learn a triple homicide had occurred in their tidy neighborhood of small houses.

"It's crazy," Foote said. "It blows my mind. Scary. I walk my dogs on this street all the time."

Court records show the owner of the house was trying to evict tenants for nonpayment of rent, but the landlord's daughter told The Associated Press the shooting had nothing to do with the dispute in court.

Jose Velazquez filed eviction proceedings Jan. 29 against Jose Fernando Garcia and Esther Arredondo, who countersued a week later, claiming Velazquez failed to credit the couple for making repairs to the $116,000 house.

Several other people appeared to be staying at or frequently visiting the house, said Stephanie Velazquez, the owner's daughter. She didn't know if the tenants were victims of the shooting.

Can simple measures of labile soil organic matter predict corn performance?

Can simple measures of labile soil organic matter predict corn performance? [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 11-Feb-2013

American Society of Agronomy

Organic matter is important for soil health and crop productivity. While an indicator of soil quality, a lot of organic matter is in extremely stable forms, and the nutrients in such forms are difficult for plants to use. The active, labile fraction, however, is a modest but important part of the organic matter.

"The labile fraction is small usually less than 20 or even 10 percent, depending on how you define it," explains Steve Culman, lead author of a study published online Feb. 8 in Agronomy Journal. "But it is where a lot of the action happens. It's where soil nutrients are rapidly cycled and are interacting with microbial communities."

The size of the labile pool, then, can be an important predictor of corn agronomic performance. But the tests used up to this point to measure those pools, such as microbial biomass and particulate organic matter, were labor intensive and expensive. Culman, in Sieg Snapp's lab at the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, decided to use other measurements of the labile fractions including nitrogen mineralization and carbon mineralization to see what information these inexpensive tests might give them. Their results suggest that simple measures of labile organic matter can reflect long-term management and short-term seasonal changes as well as predict corn performance.

To better understand labile soil organic measurements and what they could tell farmers, the researchers measured soils managed in a variety of conditions. Fields were maintained with three different management practices (conventional, integrated, and compost) and two different crop rotations (continuous corn with no cover crops and corn-soybean-wheat with cover crops). After collecting soil from the different fields, the scientists then measured carbon and nitrogen mineralization.

"What's nice about carbon and nitrogen mineralization is they're based on actual biological activity," says Culman. "You take into account the soil microbes and environment for these tests."

A long-term cropping system trial provided the perfect opportunity to test the extent to which carbon and nitrogen mineralization measurements were affected by both management practice and crop rotation. These tests, then, could be used to identify the best practices, such as fertilizer application, for a given field. This would be especially useful for nitrogen a nutrient that is incredibly important for crop growth but is rarely measured by farmers.

"Most farmers don't test their soils for nitrogen," explains Culman. "They just basically apply a rate based on their yield goals, and excess nitrogen may be applied. The long-term goal would be to offer these as predictive tests for farmers so they can say, 'Given my soil type, management, and these measures, I should apply this amount of nitrogen.' That's the ultimate goal."

The predictive power of such tests for best management practices goes hand-in-hand with crop performance. The researchers also found that carbon mineralization was a better predictor of corn agronomic performance than other measures that are currently used (pre-sidress nitrate test and leaf chlorophyll). With these tests, Culman and his coauthors hope to provide farmers with better tools to manage their fields and increase crop yields.

Says Culman, "This could have tremendous impacts, locally, regionally, and nationally, in terms of having tools that better predict our cropping system performance based on soil properties."

Four shots rang out rapidly Saturday night, followed by screams as some in the crowd staggered into one another and a nearby wall, video taken by a bystander and released by police showed. Authorities said in an email Sunday that an argument involving one of the victims led to the shooting. They described the video ? released early Sunday ? as showing two men leaving the argument and returning with a third before the gunfire erupted.

No arrests were immediately reported, and police said they were seeking the three men who fled.

The wounded were two males and two females, New Orleans Police spokesman Frank B. Robertson said. One male victim was in guarded condition Sunday with shots to the abdomen, thigh and pelvis, Robertson said. The second male was shot in the buttocks, one female was shot on the chin and right foot, and the second female was shot on the toe, according to Robertson's statement.

Police had said late Saturday that the most severely wounded man was undergoing surgery while the others were stable. None was identified by age or name.

The shooting came on the last weekend of partying before Mardi Gras, the Fat Tuesday celebration that is the signature tourist event of the year in New Orleans. And for thousands, the partying continued despite the shooting.

New Orleans has been plagued for years by violent crime, including gun violence that has soared since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in 2005.

In 2011, sixteen people were shot and at least two killed in Halloween shootings in New Orleans. One of those killed ? a 25-year-old local resident ? was shot near the famous Chris Owens nightclub, about a block away from Saturday's incident.

Police placed the Saturday shooting in the 400 block of Bourbon Street.

Patrick Clay, 21, a Louisiana State University student, told The Times-Picayune that he was standing on the corner of Bourbon Street on Saturday night when suddenly he saw a crowd running and people screaming that there had been a shooting.

"Everyone immediately started running and the cops immediately started running toward where people were running from," Clay said. "I was with a group of about seven people and at that point, we all just kind of grasped hands and made our way through the crowd as soon as possible."

Some bartenders and revelers said the block of Bourbon Street where the shooting occurred was closed for a time while detectives investigated, but partying resumed hours later across that stretch.

Julia Rosenthal, a 19-year-old from Westchester, N.Y., had mixed feelings about hanging out in the French Quarter after the shooting. "It's not an OK thing that happened, and it's definitely scary. But I'm not going to let it affect my night," she said.

Peter Manabani, an employee at the Rat's Hole bar, said police had shut down a whole Bourbon Street block for an hour to investigate but allowed people to return to the area later.

Hours later on Sunday, there was little evidence that a shooting had occurred. Overnight revelers were in full party mode, packing the block amid a heavy police presence.

Laura Gonzalez, 21, of Baytown, Texas, said it was her first Mardi Gras and she spent some time in the Fat Catz bar nearby as police investigated. She said the bar locked its doors quickly after the shots rang out and wouldn't let anyone in or out while police went to the scene.

Asked if it was frightening, she responded: "Not really. We were just locked in a bar and we weren't going to let this one incident wreck our party."

Parades rolled all day Saturday but none on Bourbon Street because the streets are too narrow. One of the biggest Mardi Gras parades, the Krewe of Endymion, rolled down a major thoroughfare and just skirted Bourbon Street a few hours before the shooting. Typically, once the parades end, partygoers head to the French Quarter.
