Progressive optics for side mirrors ends automobile blind spots without distorting view, experts say

Jan. 28, 2013 ? A new optical prescription for automobile side-view mirrors may eliminate the dreaded "blind spot" in traffic without distorting the perceived distance of cars approaching from behind. As described in a new paper? in the Optical Society's (OSA) journal Optics Letters, objects viewed in a mirror using the new design appear larger than in traditional side-view mirrors, so it's easier to judge their following distance and speed.

Today's motor vehicles in the United States use two different types of mirrors for the driver and passenger sides. The driver's side mirror is flat so that objects viewed in it are undistorted and not optically reduced in size, allowing the operator to accurately judge an approaching-from-behind vehicle's separation distance and speed. Unfortunately, the optics of a flat mirror also create a blind spot, an area of limited vision around a vehicle that often leads to collisions during merges, lane changes, or turns. The passenger side mirror, on the other hand, possesses a spherical convex shape. While the small radius of curvature widens the field of view, it also causes any object seen in it to look smaller in size and farther away than it actually is. Because of this issue, passenger side mirrors on cars and trucks in the United States must be engraved with the safety warning, "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear." In the European Union, both driver and passenger side mirrors are aspheric (One that bulges more to one side than the other, creating two zones on the same mirror). The inner zone -- the section nearest the door -- has a nearly perfect spherical shape, while the outer zone -- the section farthest from the door -- becomes less and less curved toward the edges. The outer zone of this aspheric design also produces a similar distance and size distortion seen in spherical convex designs.

In an attempt to remedy this problem, some automotive manufacturers have installed a separate, small wide-angle mirror in the upper corner of side mirrors. This is a slightly domed square that provides a wide-angle view similar to a camera's fisheye lens. However, drivers often find this system to be a distracting as well as expensive addition.

A simpler design for a mirror that would be free of blind spots, have a wide field of view, and produce images that are accurately scaled to the true size of an approaching object -- and work for both sides of a vehicle -- has been proposed by researchers Hocheol Lee and Dohyun Kim at Hanbat National University in Korea and Sung Yi at Portland State University in Oregon. Their solution was to turn to a progressive additive optics technology commonly used in "no-line multifocal" eyeglasses that simultaneously corrects myopia (nearsightedness) and presbyopia (reduced focusing ability).

"Like multifocal glasses that give the wearer a range of focusing abilities from near to far and everything in between, our progressive mirror consists of three resolution zones: one for distance vision, one for close-up viewing and a middle zone making the transition between the two," says Lee. "However, unlike glasses where the range of focus is vertically stacked [from distance viewing on top to close-up viewing on bottom], our mirror surface is horizontally progressive."

Lee says that a driver's side mirror manufactured with his team's new design would feature a curvature where the inner zone is for distance viewing and the outer zone is for near-field viewing to compensate for what otherwise would be blind spots. "The image of a vehicle approaching from behind would only be reduced in the progressive zone in the center," Lee says, "while the image sizes in the inner and outer zones are not changed."

The horizontal progressive mirror, Lee says, does have some problems with binocular disparity (the slight difference between the viewpoints of a person's two eyes) and astigmatism (blurring of a viewed image due to the difference between the focusing power in the horizontal and vertical directions). These minor errors are a positive trade off, the researchers feel, to gain a mirror with a greatly expanded field of view, more reliable depth perception, and no blind spot.

To prove the merits of their design, the researchers used a conventional glass molding process to manufacture a prototype horizontal progressive mirror. They were able to produce a mirror with more than double the field of view of a traditional flat mirror.

Other wide-angle designs have also been proposed, but the new design described January 28 in the Optics Letters paper offers a particularly easy-to-manufacture approach to the problem of blind spots by seamlessly integrating just three zones.

The researchers claim that the manufacturing cost of their proposed mirror design would be cheaper than the mirror design with the added small wide-angle viewing section. Since mirror designs are stipulated by national automobile regulations, the new design would need to be approved for use in the United States before appearing on cars here.

Cow smuggling ... it's how Bangladesh gets its beef

Beef is a delicacy in Bangladesh, but Hindu-majority India refuses to sell their sacred cows. The demand is so high, however, that a dangerous $920 million cow smuggling trade has popped up. ?

By Shaikh Azizur Rahman,?Contributor / January 26, 2013

An Indian Hindu man stands with a cow as he waits for alms at Sangam, the confluence of the holy rivers Ganges and Yamuna and mythical Saraswati at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, India, last week. Cows are everywhere in India, but the cow is considered holy in the Hindu-majority country. There are 26 breeds of cow in India. The hump, long ears, and bushy tail distinguish the Indian cow.

More than 90 percent of the 160 million people who live there are Muslims and for them beef is a delicacy.?

The country's meat producers estimate that slaughterhouses need up to 3 million cows every year to feed Bangladeshi appetites, and to help meet demand, Bangladesh is eyeing neighboring India. Cows are everywhere in India, but the cow is considered holy in the Hindu-majority country. In fact, slaughtering cows is banned in many Indian states, and New Delhi refuses to export?them.

That refusal hasn't done much to deter the demand for beef in Bangladesh, however.? In fact, say officials in Dhaka, beef has become so valuable it's spurred a dangerous cow smuggling trade across the India-Bangladesh border.?

More than 2 million cows are smuggled from India to Bangladesh every year and most of the illegal trade takes place through the Indian border state of West Bengal, says Bimal Pramanik, an independent researcher in Calcutta, India.

?Bangladeshi slaughterhouses cannot source even 1 million cows from within the country. If Indian cows do not reach the Bangladeshi slaughterhouses, there will be a big crisis there,? says Mr. Pramanik, adding that 3 out of every 4 cows slaughtered in the country are from India.?

?In this thriving trade, [herds of] cows worth 50 billion rupees [$920 million] are sent across to Bangladesh every year. It?s the sheer economics of the trade that drives the smuggling,??says Pramanik.

Cattle smugglers say they routinely bribe the police, customs, Border Security Force guards, and even some politicians in India to look the other way.

However, locals call this part of the border the ?Wall of Death,? for the smuggling-related tensions that?sometimes?turn into violence. In 2012, security forces killed 48 Bangladeshis along the border, according to the Bangladeshi human rights group Ain o Salish Kendra.?

But Bangladeshis say there is a simple way to end violence along the border.

"If India begins exporting cows to Bangladesh, such untoward incidents will stop," said the Bangladeshi Commerce Minister Golam Mohammad Quader.? "We are really keen to import cows from India, and want all illegal activities involving cow trade across the border to end," he said.

The former head of India's Border Security Forces Utthan Kumar Bansal recently agreed:?

?The menace of smuggling might be best controlled if the trade across the border is made legal. The legalization of export of cows could also help curb tension on the volatile border,? Mr. Bansal said.

Although Bansal?s comment did not trigger any government reaction in India, some right wing Hindu groups said they would never let India export cows to any country.?

Radhakanta Saha, who is a World Hindu Organization leader and heads a volunteer group that aims to prevent cow smuggling in West Bengal, said: ?The cow is our mother. We shall begin country-wide agitation if India decides to export cows to a country where they are likely to be slaughtered for ... meat.?

High School Biology - The Dish | By Andrew Sullivan - The Daily Beast

In a long essay on the formative impact high school has on us, Jennifer Senior unpacks the science behind these crucial years:

[T]he prefrontal cortex has not yet finished developing in adolescents. It?s still adding myelin, the fatty white substance that speeds up and improves neural connections, and until those connections are consolidated?which most researchers now believe is sometime in our mid-?twenties?the more primitive, emotional parts of the brain (known collectively as the limbic system) have a more significant influence. This explains why adolescents are such notoriously poor models of self-?regulation, and why they?re so much more dramatic??more Kirk than Spock,? in the words of B.?J. Casey, a neuroscientist at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. In adolescence, the brain is also buzzing with more dopamine activity than at any other time in the human life cycle, so everything an adolescent does?everything an adolescent feels?is just a little bit more intense. ?And you never get back to that intensity,? says Casey. (The British psychoanalyst Adam Phillips has a slightly different way of saying this: ?Puberty,? he writes, ?is everyone?s first experience of a sentient madness.?)

Computers and Technology|Hardware: Various Server Options For ...

Are you planning to setup an office which is complete in computer equipment, networking tools, and other IT infrastructure? If so, one of the many things you might be concerned with right now is how to pick the right server option that fits your newly established business. The truth is, there are many alternatives out there and it is easy to get lost with every tech solution presented by IT resellers and retailers.

However, if you want the best choice of server for your fledgling business, you need to be aware of the following options to select from:

Dedicated Server Options

Dedicated servers are hot because it provides computer administrators the capacity to have full control over their operations. This is the best option if you are running a business operation which requires your personnel to communicate and collaborate with their colleagues on multiple floors or locations. For example, instead of relying on an internet service provider to provide internet connections to your workstation computers, a dedicated server can provide its own connection in-house.

When it comes to uploading files into private archives, dedicated servers also works best for medium to large population staff because these types of servers are known for being able to handle huge amounts of traffic, storage data, or bandwidth. That means, if you run an intranet in your office or a shared virtual workspace, your dedicated server can handle it.

The only slight downside of dedicated servers is that you need to handle all the maintenance, software or hardware upgrades, and technical troubleshooting on your own.

Cloud Servers

These are servers which can be found "in the cloud", or in simpler language, servers that can be accessed, modified and configured online. This type of server is relatively new in the industry and it is revolutionary because it allows people and companies to send and store their data while using minimal hardware. Through a cloud server, a web administrator can easily control other servers within a virtual private network. File sharing and archiving is also made much easier through this amazing option.

Blade Servers

Blade servers function pretty much like any other high-end server, but the only difference is that it is optimized to conserve space and energy within your work environment. Because of its modular design, blade servers can easily fit in very small office space. This is ideal for companies who are just starting out to do business. These types of start-up business can still enjoy smooth employee communication and IT processes even with minimum space and budget.

One of the best ways to save money on your server and data storage device purchases is to get your IT equipment from an independent IT reseller. This way you can have a wide array of server options to choose from, as well as lower markup rates. Many companies save thousands of dollars per year by doing this.

Soccer violence verdict sparks deadly riots in Egypt

CAIRO (AP) ? Angry relatives and residents rampaged through an Egyptian port city Saturday in rioting that killed at least 27 people after a judge sentenced nearly two dozen soccer fans to death for involvement in deadly violence after a game last year.

The unrest was the latest in a bout of violence that has left a total of 38 people dead in two days, including 11 killed in clashes between police and protesters marking Friday's second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew longtime leader Hosni Mubarak.

President Mohammed Morsi canceled a scheduled trip to Ethiopia Saturday and instead met for the first time with top generals as part of the newly formed National Defense Council.

The violence in Port Said erupted after a judge sentenced 21 people to death in connection with the Feb. 1 soccer melee that killed 74 fans of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

All the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? can appeal the verdict.

Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid did not give his reasoning when he read out the verdicts for 21 out of the 73 defendants Saturday. The verdict for the remaining 52 defendants, including nine security officials, is scheduled to be delivered March 9. Some have been charged with murder and others with assisting the attackers.

Die-hard soccer fans from both teams, known as Ultras, hold the police at least partially responsible for February's violence, which was the world's worst soccer violence in 15 years, saying officers at the game did nothing to stop the bloodshed. They also criticize Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi for doing little to reform the police force or the judiciary since he took office in July.

The opposition says Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected and civilian president, and his Muslim Brotherhood allies in government have failed to restore stability amid continued political turmoil and crime, and point to a worsening economy.

In a statement Saturday, the main opposition National Salvation Front said it holds Morsi responsible for "the excessive use of force by the security forces against protesters." They threatened to boycott upcoming parliamentary elections if Morsi does not meet their demands that include amending articles in the new constitution.

The Brotherhood said in its statement that "misleading" media outlets were to blame for "enflaming the people's hatred for the current regime and urging them to act violently."

Immediately after Saturday's verdict was read live on state TV, two policemen were shot dead outside Port Said's main prison when angry relatives tried to storm the facility to free the defendants. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, as well as live rounds, at the crowd outside the prison.

In other parts of the city, residents tried to storm the governor's office, police stations, the power station and the main court building. Residents occupied one police station in the east of Port Said.

The director of hospitals in Port Said, Dr. Abdel-Raham Farah, said two local soccer players were shot to death as they were apparently on their way to practice. He identified them as Mahmoud Abdel-Halim al-Dizawi, who played for the city's Al-Marikh club, and Tamer al-Fahla, who used to play for the city's main Al-Masry team. Al-Diwazi was shot three times, the doctor said.

The club they were training at is near the prison that residents tried to storm.

The military was deployed in Port Said to try to restore security, but assaults continued into the evening. The army was widely used to keep order by top generals who took over after Hosni Mubarak, but the military has kept a much lower profile since Morsi was elected.

Egyptian military forces also were sent into the canal city of Suez after eight people died in Friday's clashes between security forces and protesters opposed to the new president and the Brotherhood. Another protester was killed in Ismailiya, and security officials told the state news agency MENA that two policemen were killed in Friday's protests.

Many of the young men who led the protests and clashes hail from the Ultras. They often come from poor neighborhoods and view the police force that was the backbone of Mubarak's authoritarian rule as their nemesis.

"The police are thugs!" yelled relatives of the deceased inside the courtroom before the judge took the bench.

Near Cairo's Tahrir Square, where tens of thousands had amassed to mark the two-year anniversary a day earlier, Ultras Al-Ahly waved their team's red flag as they clashed with police who fired tear gas to disburse the crowd near Cabinet headquarters and Parliament.

Underlining the distrust that lingers between much of the public and the police, survivors and witnesses say Mubarak loyalists had a hand in instigating last year's attack, which began after Port Said's home team won the match, 3-1, and that the police at the very least were responsible for gross negligence.

Al-Masry fans stormed the pitch after the game ended, attacking Cairo's Al-Ahly fans. Authorities shut off the stadium lights, plunging it into darkness. In the exit corridor, the fleeing crowd pressed against a chained gate until it broke open. Many were crushed under the crowd of people trying to flee.

Other survivors said it was simply bloodthirsty Al-Masry fans and lack of enough security that led to the deaths of their colleagues. Both sides blame police for failing to perform usual searches for weapons at the stadium.

Anger is boiling in Port Said, where residents say they have been unfairly scapegoated.

A lawyer of one of the defendants given a death sentence said the verdict was political.

"There is nothing to say these people did anything and we don't understand what this verdict is based on," Mohammed al-Daw told The Associated Press by telephone.

"Our situation in Port Said is very grave because kids were taken from their homes for wearing green T-shirts," he said, referring to the Al-Masry team color.

Al-Daw and other defense attorneys said all those sentenced were Al-Masry fans. As is customary in Egypt, the death sentences will be sent to the nation's top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for approval, though the court has final say on the matter.

Fans of Al-Ahly, whose stands were attacked by rival club Al-Masry in the incident in Port Said, had promised more violence in the days leading up to the verdict if the death penalty was not handed down.

Before the judge could read out the names of the 21, families erupted in relief, yelling "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for "God is great," with their hands in the air and waving pictures of the deceased. One man fainted while others hugged one another. The judge smacked the bench several times to try to restore calm in the courtroom.

"This was necessary," said Nour al-Sabah, whose 17-year-old son Ahmed Zakaria died in last year's melee. "Now I want to see the guys when they are executed with my own eyes, just as they saw the murder of my son."

Thousands of Al-Ahly fans gathered outside the Cairo sports club for the verdict, chanting against the police and the government.

"We are not really that happy," Mohamed Ahmed, a survivor of the attack, said. "The government helped the Ultras of Port Said by blocking the gates of the stadium until people suffocated to death.

Hashtag goes Gallic in French lawbooks

(AP) ? The French government is redefining hashtag with a Gallic touch. The country that has an academy devoted solely to the use of the French language has given its official seal of approval to a new word for the Twittersphere: mot-diese.

Pronounced 'Mo-Dee-YEZ', it doesn't exactly trip off the tongue. But that's not the point. French law requires that government agencies use French terms ? and teachers are required to spread the word. New words are approved by the Academie Francaise and written into the lawbooks.

The French word for hashtag, published in the official journal on Wednesday, follows the government's somewhat successful redefinition of email ? courriel ? and its less successful attempt to persuade people to avoid the word "weekend."

Wayward dolphin makes splash in polluted NYC canal

NEW YORK (AP) ? A wayward dolphin has been making a splash in a polluted New York City canal.

Friday's deep-freeze weather didn't seem to faze the dolphin as it swam around in the Gowanus (guh-WAH'-nuhs) Canal, which runs 1.5 miles through a narrow industrial zone near some of Brooklyn's wealthiest neighborhoods.

Bundled-up onlookers took cellphone photos. A news helicopter hovered overhead.

The dolphin appears to be about 7 feet long. It has surfaced periodically and shaken black gunk from its snout in the polluted water.

The New York Police Department says animal experts are waiting to see if the dolphin leaves the canal on its own during the evening's high tide. If not, they plan to lend a hand Saturday.

The filthy canal was named a Superfund site in 2010, meaning the government can force polluters to pay for its restoration.

Mumbai sentencing: American gets 35 years, judge calls him 'terrorist'

David Coleman Headley, a US citizen of Pakistani heritage, conducted surveillance for the Mumbai attackers. In light of his cooperation with investigators, prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.

By Warren Richey,?Staff writer / January 24, 2013

In this courtroom sketch, David Coleman Headley appears before US District Judge Harry Leinenweber at federal court in Chicago, Thursday, as Leinenweber imposes a sentence of 35 years in prison for the key role Headley played in a 2008 terrorist attack on Mumbai that has been called India's 9/11.

David Coleman Headley, a US citizen of Pakistani heritage, was arrested in October 2009. He agreed shortly afterward to cooperate with US investigators and intelligence officials, and he testified against one of his fellow co-conspirators.

Among other information, Mr. Headley told US officials of a link between the terror operation in India and Pakistan?s intelligence service, the ISI. He identified his ISI contact as ?Major Iqbal,? according to court documents.

?Major Iqbal? helped plan and fund the Mumbai attacks, he said.

In light of his cooperation, prosecutors did not seek the death penalty for Headley. In addition, instead of a life sentence, prosecutors urged US District Judge Harry Leinenweber to impose a 30 to 35-year prison term.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Leinenweber called Headley a ?terrorist? and rejected suggestions he had reformed his life.

?I don?t have any faith in Mr. Headley when he says he?s a changed person and believes in the American way of life,? the judge said, according to the Associated Press.

In their sentencing memorandum, prosecutors acknowledged that Headley played ?an essential role in the planning of a horrific terrorist attack.?

?There is little question that life imprisonment would be an appropriate punishment for Headley?s incredibly serious crimes,? they said. But they added that his extensive cooperation had been of ?significant value? to US anti-terror efforts.

Headley, 52, is unlikely to emerge from prison until he is well into his 80s.

Headley pleaded guilty in March 2010 to all 12 counts in his indictment. The charges included conspiracy to bomb public places in India, conspiracy to murder and maim persons in India, and six counts of aiding and abetting the murder of US citizens in India.

Among the dead were six American citizens.

Love triumphs over hate to make exotic new compound: Compound could be useful in batteries, semiconductors, memory devices

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Northwestern University graduate student Jonathan Barnes had a hunch for creating an exotic new chemical compound, and his idea that the force of love is stronger than hate proved correct. He and his colleagues are the first to permanently interlock two identical tetracationic rings that normally are repelled by each other. Many experts had said it couldn't be done.

On the surface, the rings hate each other because each carries four positive charges (making them tetracationic). But Barnes discovered by introducing radicals (unpaired electrons) onto the scene, the researchers could create a love-hate relationship in which love triumphs.

Unpaired electrons want to pair up and be stable, and it turns out the attraction of one ring's single electrons to the other ring's single electrons is stronger than the repelling forces.

The process links the rings not by a chemical bond but by a mechanical bond, which, once in place, cannot easily be torn asunder.

The study detailing this new class of stable organic radicals will be published Jan. 25 by the journal Science.

"It's not that people have tried and failed to put these two rings together -- they just didn't think it was possible," said Sir Fraser Stoddart, a senior author of the paper. "Now this molecule has been made. I cannot overemphasize Jonathan's achievement -- it is really outside the box. Now we are excited to see where this new chemistry leads us."

Sir Fraser is the Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern. In the late 1980s, he was one of the early pioneers to introduce an additional type of bond, the mechanical bond, into chemical compounds.

The new Northwestern compound has attractive electronic characteristics and can be made quickly and inexpensively. Down the road, it may be possible to expand this first linked pair into a longer chain-like polymer where this methodology could be useful in new technologies for batteries, semiconductors and electronic memory devices.

Driven by curiosity, Barnes only began to look at the radical chemistry of the ring cyclobis (paraquat-p-phenylene) two years ago, nearly 25 years after the ring was first made.

"I wondered what would happen if we took it all the way to the max," said Barnes, the paper's first author and a member of Stoddart's group. "Can we take two of these rings, each with four positive charges, and make them live together?"

The rings repel each other like the positive poles of two magnets. Barnes saw an opportunity where he thought he could tweak the chemistry by using radicals to overcome the hate between the two rings.

"We made these rings communicate and love each other under certain conditions, and once they were mechanically interlocked, the bond could not be broken," Barnes said.

Barnes' first strategy -- adding electrons to temporarily reduce the charge and bring the two rings together -- worked the first time he tried it. He, Stoddart and their colleagues started with a full ring and a half ring that they then closed up around the first ring (using some simple chemistry), creating the mechanical bond.

When the compound is oxidized and electrons lost, the strong positive forces come roaring back -- "It's hate on all the time," Barnes said -- but then it is too late for the rings to be parted. "That's the beauty of this system," he added.

Most organic radicals possess short lifetimes, but this unusual radical compound is stable in air and water. The compound tucks the electrons away inside the structure so they can't react with anything in the environment. The tight mechanical bond endures despite the unfavorable electrostatic interactions.

The two interlocked rings house an immense amount of charge in a mere cubic nanometer of space. The compound, a homo[2]catenane, can adopt one of six oxidation states and can accept up to eight electrons in total.

"Anything that accepts this many electrons has possibilities for batteries," Barnes said.

"Applications beckon," Stoddart agreed. "Now we need to spend more time with materials scientists and people who make devices to see how this amazing compound can be used."

School district suggests breast reduction for bullied 13-year-old girl

A school district official in Missouri allegedly told the mother of a 13-year-old girl that the girl should undergo breast reduction surgery if she wants to put an end to constant bullying about her cup size.

Tammie Jackson says her daughter Gabrielle, a sixth grader at Central Middle School in north St. Louis County, has faced bawdy comments and general harassment for several months because of her large breasts, KTVI reports.

When Jackson contacted the school district in an effort to find a way to stop to the teasing, she says she got a response she wasn?t exactly expecting.

?The lady on the phone said they could transfer my daughter and said her boobs were so large she will always get teased,? Jackson told the station. ?And the only suggestion she had for me is to have my daughter get a breast reduction.?

?It makes me feel like now you are telling me it?s my fault ?? it?s God?s fault the way He made her,? Jackson also said.

Clive Coleman, superintendent of the Riverview Gardens School District, said that a reduction in bullying is one of the district?s goals, notes the New York Daily News.

As for Jackson?s allegations, the superintendent theorizes that she and the district official could have crossed signals.

?We?re still investigating it,? he told the local Fox affiliate. ?But to be honest with you, I think it?s maybe a product of miscommunication.?

Jackson also says her nine-year-old son Elijah faces bullying at his school, according to KTVI. He has surgical scars as a result of a rare heart condition. The taunting has led Elijah to make suicidal comments.

Superintendent Coleman informed the mother that he wants to set up a meeting in the hopes of finding a resolution to the bullying that has beset both children, according to the Daily Mail.

Walmart Adopts 'Zero Tolerance Policy' On Subcontracting After Bangladesh Factory Fire

BENTONVILLE, Ark. ? Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has alerted its global suppliers that it will immediately drop them if they subcontract their work to factories that haven't been authorized by the discounter.

Wal-Mart's stricter measure, along with other changes to its policy, comes amid increasing calls for better safety oversight after a deadly fire at a Bangladesh factory that supplied clothing to Wal-Mart and other retailers. The fire in late November killed 112 workers at a factory owned by Tazreen Fashions Ltd. Wal-Mart has said the factory wasn't authorized to make its clothes.

In a letter sent Tuesday to suppliers of its Wal-Mart stores as well as Sam's Clubs in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom, the company says it will adopt a "zero tolerance" policy on subcontracting without the company's knowledge, effective March. 1. Previously, suppliers had three chances to rectify mistakes.

Wal-Mart also said it plans to publish on its corporate website a list of factories that haven't been authorized to manufacture goods for Wal-Mart.

Also, starting June 1, suppliers must have an employee stationed in countries where they subcontract to ensure compliance, rather than relying on third-party agents.

"We want the right accountability and ownership to be in the hands of the suppliers," said Rajan Kamalanathan, Wal-Mart's vice president of ethical sourcing in an interview with The Associated Press. "We are placing our orders in good faith."

Wal-Mart will be holding a meeting for clothing suppliers from the U.S. and Canada on Thursday to explain the new policy changes.

Wal-Mart ranks second behind Swedish fast fashion retailer H&M in the number of clothing orders it places in Bangladesh. Before the fatal fire there, Wal-Mart had taken new steps to address the growing problem of safety such as mandating fire safety training for all levels of factory management. Building fires have led to more than 600 garment work deaths in Bangladesh since 2005, according to research by the advocacy group International Labor Rights Forum.

Kamalanathan said the company is looking to create a fund that factories can use to improve safety standards, but that is still in discussion. He also said local governments and other suppliers and retailers have to do their part in boosting work safety in factories.

DEFICITS AND DECISIONS

A look at the issues that those who govern the country will face during Barack Obama's second term. Up now: the deficit.

___

President Barack Obama devotes one word ? "deficit" ? to the issue that brought Washington to the brink of fiscal crises time and again during his first term.

But it's the paragraph that follows in his inaugural address that foreshadows what's to come: more hard bargaining and more last-minute deals driven by a conviction that he wields an upper hand.

"We must make the hard choices to reduce the cost of health care and the size of our deficit. But we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future," he says. "The commitments we make to each other ? through Medicare, and Medicaid, and Social Security ? these things do not sap our initiative; they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great."

This was the language of his re-election campaign. And while his address contained no reference to either political party, his pointed rejection of "a nation of takers" was an implicit reminder of the ill-timed surfacing of Mitt Romney's declaration that Obama's support came from the 47 percent of American voters "who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it."

Thin film solar cells: New world record for solar cell efficiency

Jan. 18, 2013 ? In a remarkable feat, scientists at Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, have developed thin film solar cells on flexible polymer foils with a new record efficiency of 20.4% for converting sunlight into electricity. The cells are based on CIGS semiconducting material (copper indium gallium (di)selenide) known for its potential to provide cost-effective solar electricity. The technology is currently awaiting scale-up for industrial applications.

To make solar electricity affordable on a large scale, scientists and engineers the world over have long been trying to develop a low-cost solar cell, which is both highly efficient and easy to manufacture with high throughput. Now a team at Empa's Laboratory for Thin Film and Photovoltaics, led by Ayodhya N. Tiwari, has made (yet another) leap ahead. They achieved a record 20.4% energy conversion efficiency for thin film CIGS solar cells on flexible polymer substrates, a massive improvement over the previous record of 18.7% achieved by the same team in May 2011. Tiwari?s team has been investigating and developing various thin film solar cell technologies for some time. Over the years the laboratory has boosted the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of flexible CIGS solar cells time and again, from 12.8% in 1999 ? the group?s first world record ? to 14.1% in 2005, 17.6% in 2010 and 18.7% in 2011.

Closing the efficiency gap to silicon wafer cells

The latest in the series of records has been achieved, thanks to innovative ideas and excellent team work in the lab, especially by PhD students Adrian Chirila and Fabian Pianezzi. The team has succeeded in modifying the properties of the CIGS layer, grown at low temperatures, which absorbs light and contributes to the photo-current in solar cells. The cell efficiency value was independently certified by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) in Freiburg, Germany. What?s more, Empa?s new record efficiency for flexible solar cells now even exceeds the record value of 20.3% for CIGS solar cells on glass substrates ? and equals the highest efficiencies for polycrystalline silicon wafer-based solar cells. "We have now ? finally ? managed to close the "efficiency gap" to solar cells based on polycrystalline silicon wafers or CIGS thin film cells on glass", says Tiwari.

Thin film, lightweight and flexible high-performance solar modules are attractive for numerous applications such as solar farms, roofs and facades of buildings, automobiles and portable electronics and can be produced using continuous roll-to-roll manufacturing processes that offer further cost reductions compared to standard silicon technologies. In other words, they have the potential to enable low-cost solar electricity in the near future. ?The series of record efficiencies for flexible CIGS solar cells developed at Empa demonstrates that thin film solar cells can match the excellent performance of polycrystalline silicon cells. Now it is time for the next step, the scale-up of the technology to cover large areas in a cost-efficient roll-to-roll manufacturing process with an industrial partner?, says Gian-Luca Bona the Director of Empa. For this purpose, Empa is collaborating with Flisom, a start-up company involved in industrialization of flexible CIGS solar cells.

The research work has been supported over the years by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI), the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) and the EU Framework Programmes.

e Customer Reviews Part of Your Marketing Strategy in 2013 | Small ...

make customer reviews part of your marketing Strategy in 2013

Richard McMunn is a leading career and recruitment specialist and founder of How2become.

2013 promises to be a competitive year for businesses, especially when people are looking hard at the money they spend on goods and services. Having a good business marketing strategy is essential when it comes to gaining and retaining customers, and one area that is sometimes overlooked, is including customer reviews as part of that strategy.

Many consumers are searching for customer reviews before they commit to buy a product or a service, and they like to read them from a variety of sources. Whether a business is a manufacturer, a retailer or a service provider, good customer reviews can be an excellent way of drawing in additional customers. A genuine, positive customer review has a weight that other marketing efforts simply cannot match, and shows that other people in their position consider their money to have been well spent.

Before focusing on customer reviews though, it is essential to have the basics in place. The main factors here are an honest appraisal of the goods or services that are being provided. Are they good quality? Good value for money? Is the customer service of the highest standard? Are problems dealt with easily and efficiently? Once the answer to these questions is yes, you can focus on gaining customer reviews in places that will do the most good.

For retailers who sell through third parties such as Amazon or eBay, customer reviews have been a part of life for a long time. People who buy through these sites are encouraged to leave a review of their experience as a part of the buying experience. There are, however, a large number of other sites where reviews of products and services can be made, including price comparison sites and Google itself.

Asking customers to leave a review is sometimes a tricky subject. No one wants to appear pushy, as the review left may be the opposite of what you want! One idea is to follow up each sale with an email thanking a customer for their business, and then perhaps including a link to a website where a review can be left. If a customer leaves a review there, it has many benefits beyond just the review itself. It also means that the email is a genuine one and that the customer has become connected. Placing this email address in a newsletter database can be one way of ensuring further business from them. You might even want to offer them a discount coupon off their next purchase.

The benefits of customer reviews as part of a business marketing strategy do not end there, though. Once a positive review is online, the full force of the internet in the form of social media can be brought into play, and the review can be tweeted and placed on Facebook in order to gain more exposure. Some people have even used reviews as part of a YouTube campaign, and lifting segments of positive reviews and placing them in adverts has been common place for years.

Using customer reviews as part of a business marketing strategy makes a great deal of sense and is only limited by the inventiveness with which it is applied. It can be used as an opportunity not only to promote a business, but also as a way of gaining genuine customer feedback; thus helping companies to streamline and improve their goods and services on offer.

Bridal Lingerie: Shopping for My Wedding & Honeymoon, pt. 1

Alek Wek for As If Magazine

I?m getting married in 10 weeks. And I?ve only just begun to think about my wedding lingerie.

If you?ve been reading the blog for longer than a year or so, you might remember my engagement announcement from last March. Wedding planning has moved steadily along since then?though I?ve been reluctant to talk about it much here since I didn?t want to bore all of you with the mundane details. Suffice to say, I am very happy and very excited. And now that there?s a bit of post-holiday calm right now (and a ton of brand Spring/Summer pieces arriving in stores), this seems like the perfect time to sit down and seriously plan my trousseau. By which I mean my lingerie?I was just looking for a reason to say trousseau. ;-)

Ell & Cee Bridal

Before I get started (warning: this post is very stream of consciousness), I feel like I should go ahead and say I won?t be posting the actual items I?ve purchased until after the honeymoon. It?d seem a bit?odd for the entire internet to view my honeymoon lingerie before my soon-to-be husband does, and I?d like to keep the whole shopping experience as professional-blogger-free as possible (which, in so many words, means that I?m not accepting wedding lingerie ?sponsors? or ?advertisers? or what have you). Mostly, I just want to share the whole new experience of shopping for my wedding lingerie with you?an experience I?ve never had before and intend to never have again.

To me, my wedding is a wonderfully perfect excuse to pick up a few of those pieces I?ve lusted after for years, but never felt I had a good enough reason to buy (or the funds to buy, for that matter). Even though I?ve been engaged since March of last year, I haven?t yet purchased a single piece for the wedding or honeymoon. And while that does mean I may have missed out on a one or two items (Marjolaine *sob*), I really wanted to save up my lingerie allowance, and purchase only a few special things. Pieces that were crafted with love and care by some of the very best brands in the world.

Marika Vera Bridal

It may surprise you (well, probably not, if you?re a longtime reader) to hear I?m not doing all this just for my fiance. As I?ve mentioned a few times before, he doesn?t have much use for lingerie. It?s not that he?s opposed to it; he?s just not particularly a fan of it either. Sheer and lacy pieces tend to get his attention, but beyond that, it?s just ?fabric that?s in the way.? Instead, I view the entire wedding lingerie buying experience as a special gift to myself (and, because I?ll be feeling gorgeous and beautiful and sexy, a gift-by-proxy to my fiance as well). I?m looking forward to having these pieces, not just for the wedding day and honeymoon, but for years to come afterwards. And to be reminded of this incredibly special time in my life everytime I wear them.

My everyday lingerie tends to be a lot of black. Black stretch lace boyshorts and black microfiber demi bras to be specific. A bit like a lingerie uniform. But I?m looking to expand my color palette into a much more romantic direction for the honeymoon. Think peach, cream, apricot, ivory, rose, and tea. Maybe some metallic edges or trims, and, if I?m feeling especially adventurous, a hot pink set (I?ve recently become smitten with the color) but definitely ?no? to reds, yellows, oranges, most greens, and a very strong aversion to black. For fabrics, think silk?lots and lots of silk. Sinfully luxurious silk satins. Whisper soft silk chiffons. And comfy, cozy silk jerseys. Oh, and lace! I can?t forget lace. Preferably Chantilly style lace. Because it?s the prettiest. Everyday of my honeymoon is going to be special, and I want to start everyday with appropriately special lingerie.

Brulee Bridal

When it comes to the actual items, I?d like to move beyond the basic bra and panty sets to robes, loungewear, chemises, and maybe even a teddy. I?m not interested in overly fancy or complicated pieces (nothing strappy or bondagey, for example, and a big ?no? to anything that requires assistance with zipping, fastening, buttoning, or pinning). I also don?t want anything overly constricting or binding (bye-bye corsets and girdles). And, of course, nothing fussy (GTFO, marabou feathers). And finally, nothing trashy (no crotchless, no edible, no costumes, etc.) Trashy has it?s place, of course. Just not on my honeymoon.

Saying all that out loud just reminded me that I actually do have a budget, and while it is more generous than what I generally allow for monthly purchases, I still wouldn?t call it extravagant (especially once you start throwing out pricey words like silk and lace). But I?m remembering to focus on quality over quantity. I want to purchase the kind of heirloom pieces I?ll be proud to pass along to my daughter?because they?ll be so beautiful I couldn?t imagine her not having them.

Marjolaine Bridal

I just noticed I?ve spent a lot of time talking about my honeymoon lingerie, but not very much on my lingerie for the day of ceremony. And that sounds like a great place to start for Installment 2. So stay tuned?my feelings on wedding day lingerie (an always popular subject in the lingerie community!) may surprise you.

French lead all-night bombing campaign in Diabaly

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? French forces led an all-night bombing campaign over a minuscule Malian town, not even big enough to appear on most administrative maps, in an effort to dislodge the Islamist extremists who seized the area, including its strategic military camp.

Meanwhile, a convoy of 40 to 50 armed trucks carrying French troops crossed into Mali from Ivory Coast, where they were stationed, as France prepares for a possible land assault.

French President Francois Hollande launched an attack on Mali's rebels, who are linked to al-Qaida, last week after the rebels began advancing south. France's action pre-empted a United Nations-approved plan for a military operation in Mali, which was expected to start about nine months from now. Hollande decided a military response could not wait that long.

French officials have acknowledged that the rebels are better armed and prepared than they expected. Despite France's five-day-old aerial assault, the Islamist fighters have succeeded in gaining ground, most notably taking Diabaly on Monday, which puts them roughly 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Mali's capital, Bamako. When the air raids began last week, the closest known point they occupied was 680 kilometers (420 miles) away from the capital.

"They bombed Diabaly. They bombed the town all night long. I am hiding inside a house," said Ibrahim Toure, who irons clothes for a living and happened to be passing through Diabaly on his way to visit relatives, getting caught when the Islamists encircled the town. "It only stopped this morning at around 6 a.m."

During a stop in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, Hollande told RFI radio that he was sure the French operation would succeed. "We are confident about the speed with which we will be able to stop the aggressors, the enemy, these terrorists. And with (the help) of the Africans that are being deployed, I think that in one more week we can restore Mali's territorial integrity," he said. "Air strikes were conducted overnight so that the terrorists who are seeking refuge in Diabaly ? they have not conquered the town and are hiding inside it to protect themselves ? will be chased out."

The Islamists taunted the French, saying that they have vastly exaggerated their gains. "I would advise France not to sing their victory song too quickly. They managed to leave Afghanistan. They will never leave Mali," said Oumar Ould Hamaha, a commander of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, one of the extremist groups controlling northern Mali, whose fighters are believed to be in Diabaly.

"The French resemble a fly that was attracted to a pot of honey. Now their feet are sticky. They can't fly away anymore. France has opened the doors of hell. ... They are bombing us from an altitude of 13,000 meters (yards). It's to our advantage that they send in French troops on foot. We are waiting for them. And what they should know is that every French soldier that comes into our territory should make sure to prepare his will beforehand, because he will not leave alive."

Two residents of the town of Sikasso, located on the Mali border with Ivory Coast, said the population came out to cheer the French military convoy, traveling from a base in Ivory Coast. It was unclear if they were headed to Diabaly, or elsewhere.

Britain's Ministry of Defense confirmed Tuesday that their RAF C17 aircraft carrying French military personnel and supplies had arrived in the capital, Bamako.

There are already at least 550 French troops in Mali, with more arriving every day. A total of 13 nations have agreed to either send troops, or else supplies and logistical help to aid the effort in Mali.

The al-Qaida-linked groups control an area that is the size of France itself in northern Mali, a territory larger than even Afghanistan. They seized it in conjunction with other rebel groups nine months ago, and have imposed a brutal version of Islam. Girls as young as 12 have been flogged for not covering up, as have pregnant and elderly women. The rich musical tradition of this part of the world has gone silent in the north, where even cellphone ringtones are banned.

Among the first targets of the French bombing raid was a building in the city of Gao that served as the headquarters of the Islamic police, which handed down punishments that included the amputation of the hands and feet of accused thieves.

93% Zero Dark Thirty

Chastain makes Maya as vivid as a bloodshot eye. Her porcelain skin, delicate features and feminine attire belie the steel within.

No doubt Zero Dark Thirty serves a function by airing America's dirty laundry about detainee and torture programs, but in its wake, there's a crying need for a compassionate Coming Home to counter its brutal Deer Hunter.

While "Zero Dark Thirty" may offer political and moral arguing points aplenty, as well as vicarious thrills,as a film it's simply too much of a passable thing.

From the very first scenes of Zero Dark Thirty, director Kathryn Bigelow demonstrates why she is such a formidable filmmaker, as adept with human emotion as with visceral, pulse-quickening action.

A timely and important reminder of the agonizing human price of zealotry.

Not only is Zero Dark Thirty one of the year's best movies, it's an inspiring one to share with your daughters. That is, if they're old enough to deal with explicit torture scenes.

Zero Dark Thirty is a gripping, authentic-feeling account of the dark side of the war on terror.

Chastain's Maya is a red-tressed Pre-Raphaelite madonna with the cleft chin and chiseled features of an action hero.

After the lengthy torture scenes, procedural repetition takes over until the murkily-filmed Seal Team 6 raid. But Jessica Chastain is quite convincing as a CIA operative dedicated to her job.

A well-acted, well-intentioned, disjointed mess.

A well-produced and well-acted procedural/thriller film that stays focused on the frustrating nuts and bolts CIA led search for the elusive Al Qaeda leader.

A gripping, almost necessary, piece of filmmaking.

The picture acknowledges the very real presence of torture on the post-9/11 landscape -- had the filmmakers ignored the subject, the movie would be little more than vile, jingoistic nonsense.

(Jessica) Chastain's powerful performance, for which she deserves a best actress Academy Award, drives the film. She has no private life, no friends. Her obsession drives her.

"We always get our man, eventually."

Bigelow has hamstrung herself by not committing to a viewpoint. This is a by the numbers, cold, emotionally inert, just the "facts" procedural drama that is just barely a step above an episode of Law & Order.

Bigelow has crafted a film which will keep audiences enrapt for ages to come.

In a strong field of Best Picture nominees, "Zero Dark Thirty" has a decent chance to emerge the winner.

Powerful and gripping, the movie is not only a fine document of the hunt for Public Enemy #1, but also a testament to the dedication of those in every corner of the military, government, and intelligence community who refused to give up the search.

"Zero Dark Thirty" is film making at it's best.

An important film for our nation's soul. It gives context to the manhunt, and it lets us experience it for catharsis and closure.

The film has recently been slammed, perhaps as backlash to its early critical raves, but on close examination, it's not a work to readily dismiss.

Though it surely takes some dramatic license, "Zero Dark Thirty" is a worthy document of that moment and the people who made it possible.

This isn't a bad movie, it's just too easy. This is a movie for people who want to eat their fish without having to gut it first.

Kathryn Bigelow turned 10 years of looking for bin Laden into a magnificently well-crafted film.
