Skype rolls out update for Windows with full HD video calling, group screen sharing

Skype rolled out its version 5.8 software update for Windows users today, and it brings with it a couple of fairly notable features. That includes full HD video calling (provided you have a suitable webcam and internet connection, of course), video calling to Facebook users (regardless of whether they have Skype installed or not), and group screen sharing, which will let folks share either their entire desktop or a single application with other participants on a conference call. That last feature is only available with Skype Premium, though. Other new features include a "push to talk" option that will let you set up a hotkey to trigger your microphone (for multiplayer gaming, for instance), the ability to hide offline Facebook contacts, and one possible fruit of the Microsoft acquisition: Bing toolbar integration.

3 Ways To Create Success In Your Life

Article Directory :: Self-Improvement/Motivation Articles

Perhaps everyone's ultimate dream is to be successful - not only in business, or in relationships, but generally, in every aspect of your entire life. To live a life well lived is wonderful.

One of the most frustrating things to hear others say is "I'm just going with the flow. I deal with what life throws at me. I just make do with what I have." As long as we are alive, we can make something of ourselves. We can work to improve our life situation, and choose the destiny we ultimately get. Losing hope is not an option for the successful, but being successful takes time, effort and persistence. Here are three things that can help create a fulfilling and successful life?

SET GOALS. Take some time off and review your life from a different perspective - what are your life goals? What do you hope to accomplish? And how do you plan to accomplish your goals? A goal is necessary - it's a must. The first step to creating success is to set an ultimate goal. Without a goal, there is nothing to work towards, there is nothing to look forward to, and there will be no change in your current situation. A goal is your destination - without one, efforts are pointless. ACCOMPLISHED GOAL = LIFE SUCCESS.

But it is not enough that you merely set your goal - you must think of a plan on how you intend to slowly reach it. Create a life plan. Rather than think of the prize at the end, segregate your journey into smaller segments, and accomplish each segment. You will be surprised at the amount of progress you make. Focus and concentrate on one chief aim. Eliminate all the distractions from your life.

Another good thing to remember is, a goal remains a goal unless you take action. What good is a dream if all you do is imagine having what you want? Get up from where you are and work! And when you work, work with inspiration, determination and happiness. Too many people lose sight of their objectives simply because they think of the journey towards a goal as extremely difficult and frustrating. It's your dream, your life, look at every step as a way towards success. Sometimes, you will be surprised to find that you have already reached your destination without even realizing it.

BE PERSISTENT. Another pitfall in life is one's inability to be persistent with one's enthusiasm, determination and inspiration. The moment one is faced with difficulty, problems or personal dilemma, they tend to give up on their search for success.

Reality check: no journey towards success is ever easy - if it is, then everyone in the world would be successful. The real challenge is how to overcome the hurdles - because these hurdles teach us valuable life lessons. That's another tip there - learn to see every challenge and failure as ways to learn valuable lessons. Failure was not put in our lives to make us miserable - they are the by-products of our own mistakes and our inability to do things correctly. The essence of life is in discovering all these life lessons, so don't give up when faced with failure or defeat. Remember, a goal half-done is NOT DONE. A goal "almost done" is also unaccomplished. Don't give up in the middle of something - persistence is key in creating success in your life.

ALWAYS MAINTAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. Most successful people will tell you this - in order to be successful, you must constantly believe that you can successfully do everything. Sometimes, it's not even a matter of intelligence or skill level - it's really a matter of attitude. How many times have we heard of high school drop-outs who made it really big in life? There are thousands of college graduates (with honors, even!) who are not successful in life. It is not one's education which is the gauge of one's success - it's one's positive outlook which is more important. No matter how seemingly hopeless the situation becomes, a person's positivity will help keep his head above ground.

So how does one become so positive? First, surround yourself with positive influences. Don't associate with naysayers. People who tell you that you are not capable are most probably unsuccessful in their own pursuit of their own goals. Remember this - when you are up, there will always be people who will try to pull you down - to their own level. Misery loves company. And when you are up, there will be people who won't be happy for your success. It's the evil side of people. Positive successful people remind them of their own inability to do things, and their failure in life.

Next, constantly see the beauty behind every difficult thing you are faced with. Those who are negative see difficulties are roadblocks that must be left alone- not pushed aside. Third, think of the prize at the end of the journey. To remain positive, you must set your sights on the ultimate goal, not on the difficulties you will encounter along the way.
Success is not too hard to get - it just takes the proper perspective, the right attitude, and the ability to conquer challenges. Check out how you fare in this list, and start going on your journey towards success.

Skin It to Win It ? Adventure Sports Journal

Rando racing is growing in the U.S., even if California skiers have been a little slow to join the fray. With two upcoming races in the Sierra, that may be changing
By AJ Johnson

Backcountry skiing has been on a strong growth spurt as evidenced by the increasing number of vehicles at the trailheads and the booming interest in alpine touring (AT) gear. Most skiers just want to go out on day tours or to find that remote powder stash, but like most forms of recreation, there is also a form of competition ?randonee racing.

Randonee ? ?rando? for short, or ?ski mountaineering? if perhaps you?re a Francophobic politician ? racers use lightweight ski gear to race up and down the mountain, pitting themselves not only against each other but against the terrain and the elements. The sport continues to grow in Europe, the birthplace of alpinism and ski mountaineering, and has gained prominence stateside in Colorado and the rest of the Rockies, but has yet to really establish a competitive presence in California.

However, two races this winter in the Sierra ? in Mammoth Lakes (Feb. 25) and Bear Valley (March 24) ? may help ignite interest among those that love both mountain challenges and competition. Both races are sanction by the U.S. Ski Mountaineering Association.

Rando racing is one of those few sports that combine aerobic fitness, dynamic movement, and individual reliance with an element of danger. Most races take place at a ski resort, where athletes follow a course up and down the mountain. Some events follow a simple course, while others go up and down several times. Racers need to put on and take off skins, modulate their body temperature, stay hydrated and, of course, stay upright. Snow conditions and the weather are a constant variable, so you have to be ready for anything.

Having done several races in Colorado, I can say that randonee racing gives you a thrill and sense of adventure that few events can match. Rather than being on a road surrounded by people, you?re on your own, facing a mountain. Your view is of grand peaks covered in snow, not mini-malls and office parks. The scale of the land and the constant threat of changing weather give you a feeling of true adventure, that you are part of something epic.

Survive a race and the sense of satisfaction at the end is pretty special. Unlike say running in a road race, rando racers can look back at the peaks they summited and say, ?Yeah, I skied up and down that.?

?I think the key is getting one of these off the ground. When it becomes a successful event, then other people replicate that, and then people collaborate and make a series out of these things.? ?Aaron Johnson, Mountain Adventure Seminars, race director of the Bear Valley Adventure Ski Race
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Despite these exciting elements and the proliferation of skiers using randonee-style touring gear ? more frequently referred to as AT gear on this side of the pond ? rando racing just hasn?t gained much traction among California?s snow community yet. The largest challenge may be a function of visibility ? namely, the lack of it.

?My take on the situation is just that California skiers don?t know about (the sport),? says Aaron Johnson of Mountain Adventure Seminars in Bear Valley. ?In its truest form, Californians don?t have any clue about it.?

Brendan Madigan, owner of Aplenglow Sports in Tahoe, believes randonee gets lost in the mix. ?From a Tahoe perspective, there are many advanced skiers that are totally consumed by the terrain at places like Squaw and in the backcountry. Many people, on the flip side, are into nordic skiing, so (rando racing) kind of gets lost in the middle.?

Simply put, most just don?t have rando racing on their radar.

Another obstacle is the perception of the sport. Like many mountaineering sports, randonee is hugely popular in Europe, where top-of-the-line lightweight gear, lycra ski suits and serious competition are the norm.

But like Speedos at the beach, that image does not play so well in America, where such forms of alpinism are less ingrained in the culture, lycra doesn?t fit the dominant on-slope fashion style, and skiers tend to favor heavier AT gear and put much more emphasis on going down than up.

Plus, many see the sport as something only for ?serious? or ?extreme? athletes, not as something one can try just for the fun of it.

?For Americans, it has to be designed to be fun, having a theme kind of like a 10K fun run,? says Madigan.

While sales of backcountry skiing equipment have boomed over the last 10 years, this has not translated into the racing side yet. Data from the SnowSports Industries of America shows that just in the last two years AT boots rose 23 percent and AT bindings rose four percent in units sold, while AT skis actually dropped 15 percent.

Kelly Davis, director of research for SIA, believes those stats show that ?not all AT boot and binding consumers are looking for the lighter weight type of ski that core AT participants might purchase. Much of the growth in sales in this category is about the side country (short hikes within or outside the boundaries of resorts).? For this reason most buyers opt for standard alpine skis.

So what will it take beyond snow on the ground to generate greater interest in rando racing in California?

The author at a race in Colorado.

As noted earlier, there will be two events this winter in the Sierra, the Mammoth Chase on Feb. 25, and the Bear Valley Adventure Ski Race on March 24 . The latter will be concurrent with the Bear Valley Telemark Festival (March 23-25) which was postponed from early February.

MAS? Johnson helped with permits for the event in Bear Valley last year, and took over as the race director this year. He has a long-term vision for the event. ?We?ll start small this year. My grand vision is to build a backcountry festival, and this race would be the centerpiece of a two or three-day event,? he says.

He believes the success of one event could lead to others and possibly even a series. ?I think the key is getting one of these off the ground. When it becomes a successful event, then other people replicate that, and then people collaborate and make a series out of these things. Two to three years are what it?s going to take to get an event so that it?s viewed as successful.?

Another key to building the visibility of rando racing is changing the uphill policy of many of California?s resorts. Skinning at a resort is the easiest and safest way to get in shape for a rando race, while exposing other skiers to the sport. When skiers on a lift see someone skinning up, they may laugh or be intrigued, but either way at least they are now aware of the sport.

However, many resorts are so worried about the risks and potential lawsuits that uphill traffic is banned. Resorts in other states have opened up to skinning, but California still lags behind.

?The only two resorts (in California) that allow uphill travel are Sugar Bowl and Alpine Meadows,? says Madigan. ?The rest of the resorts are quite antiquated in their policies regarding uphill travel. I think just like they?ve done in Colorado, and in Salt Lake at Brighton, where they let you skin, we?re kind of waiting for the resorts to catch on to the fact that, hey, you can make money by allowing these people to come to the resort for fitness.?

Tackling the perception that rando racing is only for the hardcore, Johnson is careful in presenting his event?s image. Rather than a race, he believes that Californians want something else. ?They almost want it more for the sense of adventure. It?s, ?Give me a challenge. Give me something that will kick my ass and then feed me some good food and beer, and I?ll have a great time,?? he says.

In his aim to make the event as inclusive as possible, he?s taking every detail into account. ?I?ve considered changing the name of our event to the Bear Valley Adventure Ski Race (since done; it was formerly called the Bear Valley Randonee Series). You have the rules of no snowshoes, but who cares if they are on tele gear or AT gear or even if snowboarders using split boards have at it,? he says.

Only time will tell if the sport of randonee racing takes off in California. It won?t happen in one season, but as more people look for new and unique challenges, racing up and down mountains on skis is bound to give them a challenge and a thrill.

Johnson is optimistic. ?Californians like to get out and race, do adventures and do challenges. I think randonee is growing; I think it?s here to stay. I can?t see it not growing if it?s well organized and well put together.?

Perhaps it will even be commonplace to see competitors sporting lycra suits with their AT boots. Hey, competitive swimmers don?t wear board shorts after all!

Author AJ Johnson spent 11 years in Colorado, skiing as often as possible. He raced his first randonee race, a 24-hour event, as part of a four-man team using rented gear. He now lives in Ventura and edits an online triathlon magazine, a sport which was once thought of as strange and extreme, as well, and is quite familiar with lycra outfits, too.

Wall Street rises on factory data, Greece (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks extended January's rally, climbing more than 1 percent on Wednesday after upbeat global manufacturing data and as Greece neared a long-delayed deal with private creditors.

The recent run of better-than-expected economic data around the globe has helped lift world equity markets as investors move away from a worst-case scenario for the global economy.

An index of the U.S. manufacturing sector rose in January to its highest level since June, an industry group said, while China's factory sector expanded slightly, confounding expectations for a contraction. Germany recorded its first rise in manufacturing output in four months.

Optimism over the economy spurred gains in industrials, financials and basic materials, which rose between 1.5 percent and 2 percent. Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N), a company heavily exposed to global industry, rose 1.6 percent to $110.88 and was the biggest boost to the Dow industrials.

"The numbers aren't horrible, the trend continues that the news is OK," said Brian Battle, vice president of trading at Performance Trust Capital Partners in Chicago. "I think we're going to grind higher."

Stocks also got a boost after Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said talks between Athens and its private creditors were "one formal step away" from a deal needed to avoid a messy default.

U.S. and European banks rallied on the news. Bank of America (BAC.N) gained 3.5 percent to $7.39 and Citigroup (C.N) rose 4 percent to $31.94.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) gained 125.07 points, or 0.99 percent, to 12,757.98. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) rose 15.62 points, or 1.19 percent, to 1,328.03. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) added 37.31 points, or 1.33 percent, to 2,851.15.

After the S&P 500 rose 4.4 percent last month, some strategists see the benchmark approaching a short-term top. The index could be "near the upper end of a trading band," with a top around 1,350, according to John Manley, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in New York.

"I'd rather own stocks than not, but on a year horizon," he said, indicating equities could pull back in the near term.

Homebuilder shares advanced after U.S. data showed construction spending surged in December to its highest level in more than 1-1/2 years. An index of housing stocks (.HGX) rose 1.9 percent.

Amazon (AMZN.O) slid 7.9 percent to $179.10 a day after the online retailer warned of a possible first-quarter loss and posted a steep drop in fourth-quarter profit.

According to Thomson Reuters data, with 228 companies having

reported results, 61 percent have beaten expectations - below the 70 percent beat rate of recent quarters.

Whirlpool (WHR.N) surged 17.7 percent to $63.91 after giving an optimistic full-year outlook.

Facebook was expected to submit paperwork to regulators for a $5 billion initial public offering and selected Morgan Stanley (MS.N) and four other bookrunners to handle the IPO, sources told Reuters unit IFR.

Morgan Stanley shares gained 5.4 percent to $19.66.

PocketCloud Remote RDP/VNC (for Android)

PocketCloud is a free Android app that allows users to connect their Android devices to Mac and Windows desktops remotely. This app serves one main purpose, and it achieves that purpose well, even when the remote computer is part of a corporate network.

Download and Install

Wyse Technology's PocketCloud is a free, 4.41MB download from the Android Market. As with many remote access solutions that connect mobile devices to remote desktops, the install process is two-fold: once on the mobile device, and once on the remote desktop.

The remote install on the desktop is called PocketCloud Companion, and it's available as a free download from Wyse's site with versions for both Mac and PC.?To create a connection, you enter your Google username and password into the software on both the Android device and the PocketCloud Companion, which creates a connection between the two machines via the Google App Engine. This means no additional configuration is necessary.

Those leery of automatic connections done through Google App Engine can opt to manually create connections via RDP or using VNC, which requires some advanced knowledge. For instance, for an RDP or VNC connection, you have to know the IP address of the host machine, as well as make sure RDP and VNC traffic are allowed on the host's network.

Establishing a connection using Google is the simplest way for most users to use PocketCloud.

The install on my Droid was simple enough. Install and log in. That's it. The Pocket Companion install on my Windows 7 laptop that I wanted to remotely connect to was also simple, but a bit more involved. PocketCloud Companion has to do a number of tasks to prep the machine to make a remote connection. These include automatically configuring Remote Desktop, firewall settings, NLA (Network Level Authentication), user privilege, Windows password , and Auto-Discovery.

The Windows password that's configured is a local password used to remotely access the Windows desktop. There are other remote access solutions that will prompt you to just enter the already created local Windows password. However, PocketCloud's solution is clever. Why? Because many corporate desktop users often do not know the local Windows account. They can only log into their machines using a network or domain account. PocketCloud's setup process gets around this restriction.

Of course, your IT department may restrict you from installing PocketCloud Companion, or may restrict PocketCloud traffic?if so, you would need to speak to your network administrator to use this solution for accessing your business machines.

Once a Google username and password is entered into PocketCloud Companion on the remote machine, the app on the phone (which otherwise simply awaits a remote sign-on from the host machine) finds the now-installed software on the client machine through Google App Engine and gives the message, "Setup is complete." All in all, it's a very smooth and surprisingly speedy setup process, and simple way to create a remote access session.

Features

PocketCloud's app allows you to remotely connect to a machine?and that's pretty much it. You can't transfer files between the Android device and remote machine. However, it allows for some smooth navigating of a remote client, at least as far as I could tell when connected remotely to my computer running Windows 7.

The app displays a mouse wheel image, providing a visual guide of where your fingers should go to execute clicks: left-click, right-click, zoom, etc. Using the mouse functions takes some getting used to, especially on a relatively small smartphone screen, but the functionality is consistent. Working with the mouse as well as getting around on the remote client's screen is smooth?a user can quickly become adept. I found using PocketCloud to access a remote Windows machine overall easier than other free solutions like Jump Desktop (290188).

While connected to a remote client, you can pull up a keyboard to type in an application on the remote desktop. It was easy to type a Word doc from my Android into Microsoft Word on my computer (not that I would want to write up most reviews that way). There's also a handy function key shortcut for executing various shortcut commands on the remote machine.

You can tweak your remote session a bit with the various settings options PocketCloud provides. For instance, you can control sound detection, windows dragging, and menu animation on the remote machine. Users can opt to have the PocketCloud app's keyboard automatically appear when connected to remote machines that have the PocketCloud companion installed, and there are some more fine tuning options.

Good, Quick and Free Remote Access

Sure, PocketCloud isn't as robust a remote access solution as some paid solutions like TeamViewer 5, an Editors' Choice remote access product that allows you to do tasks like collaborate and transfer files.

However, for a free lightweight app that gives you quick and easy remote access, it's a very good four-star option.
